The ads that watch you

Man, did we ever draw the short straw in terms of futures. No jet packs (not good ones, anyway), no faster-than-light travel, no robes or unitards.

But dystopian realities? Yeah, we got that in spades.

Take Quividi, for instance. Quividi, aside from providing a much-needed proper noun when you have too many I’s in Scrabble, is in the advertising business. Quividi’s claim to fame is creating detailed reports of the type of people that watch your ad.

By creating ads that watch you.

The company mounts cameras atop ads, and then uses their proprietary software to identify gender, approximate age, whether you’re paying attention and for how long. And, from ..read more

Johnny Rico needs help fighting … child abuse?

In a new ad campaign for Childhelp, an organization that works for the prevention and treatment of child abuse, Casper Van Dien appears as his Starship Troopers character Johnny Rico asking us to enlist in the battle to help fight child abuse. Okay … nothing against the organization, but why Johnny Rico? It just seems odd to me and a little sad. Are they trying to go the same route as the Direct TV commercials? Couldn’t they have come up with a more relevant and recognizable movie character so people over 40 don’t go “WTF?” when they see ..read more

British digital channel Dave is set to bring the crew of Red Dwarf back to earth.

Ending in 1999 after an 11 years run on British television, the scifi comedy never did see Terra Firma as it came to a close. But with a two part Easter special set to air now, the show will finally have its conclusion.

Chalk one up for another 80s revival. American television has been chalked full of these lately with the likes of Battlestar Galactica (awesome) and Knight Rider (cringe). They can be hit and miss, but fans definately are winners when they do happen.

Now who do I have to talk to in ..read more

Alan Moore will go ballistic on your kids this Halloween

Wow…two months before the movie comes out and NINE MONTHS until Halloween, we get a peek at the craptacular Watchmen costumes that will be invading location rental Halloween shops (you know, the ones that rent out spaces in vacant Circuit City’s) and Wal-Marts. Well, probably not the Silk Spectre costume, that would come near being found at ..read more

Coffin-maker Eternal Image has just leaped to at least third place on my favorite coffin-maker list of all time. (Followed only by Sweet Nokia Coffin and The Giant Shoe.

The company offers your very own Star Trek coffin and urn. Sure, the urn is fine, but when I’m ready to be beamed into that great beyond, I want to go out Nimoy style. The Star Trek coffin is about the closest thing a coffin can be to a photon torpedo and still retain some level of postmortem functionality.

There’s still no price listed, so you better hope you have someone who ..read more

DTV transition will happen

The House of Representatives killed a bill approved by the Senate late last week that would have delayed the full transition to digital television by three months.

So analog will die here in a couple of weeks to make room for over the air for emergency signals as well as more channel capacity.

Proponents of the bill claimed that there are too many who will be left without television and too many on the waiting list for government coupons that would give them a break on equipment to convert their analog televisions to digital.

Good for the government. There will always be late adopters to technology. You could pound on doors and they ..read more

V to possibly land again

V, an alien invasion series from the the 1980s, is set to receive a makeover after two decades. ABC has ordered a script to be written on the 80s property.

All I remember about the series is some creepy skin flaking and peeling human form aliens. And a big ass ship flying around.

Genre television has taken a hit lately and science fiction is taking the brunt of it. The best TV has to offer right now is Lost and Heroes, and neither is doing close to what to what it was doing two years ago.

But I say there isn’t enough aliens around right now. Only one I can think of is ..read more
