Weekend Diversion: Triumph vs Star Wars fans

Saturday
9:11 pm

So the other day we were talking about the Jedi Workout and the Today show and then the Friday Top 5 Conan O\’Brien reigned supreme amongst the late night talk shows.

As Conan was wrapping up his run on Late Night lat week, he was going back through the good times and recalled 2002 and the opening of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. He sent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to cover the action.

After the jump, here is a small weekend diversion and funny from the past to give you a good ..read more

It’s true, Cyclops is my favorite X-men

Saturday
4:08 pm

Over lunch today I ended up explaining my love of Cyclop.  Fortunately, it wasn’t one of those times where I had to defend that love.  And no, it doesn’t stem from James Marsden being cute and playing him in the movies.  It goes much deeper than that to a my Dad GMing an X-Men RPG with me and my siblings in the early 90s.  Lunch made me remember my favorite Cyclops page.  Astonishing X-men Issue 8, page 18.  It just makes me smile.  Maybe it’ll make you smile too!  If not, bring it ..read more

NASA: Putting the lure in failure

Geekbot
Saturday
12:59 pm

The superior/infallible/ennui calculations of GeekBot indicate that the crash of a very expensive NASA satellite would aptly crush/destroy/whisk the desire to boldly go where no carbon-based mouth breather has gone before. But, it turns out, the agency that brought this planet foam mattresses and foamless toothpaste shall continue to receive/collect/canoodle funding.

The Obama apparently realized the crash of a scientific probe isn’t the worst NASA launch mishap and even gave the agency a $2.4 billion boost to boot. Clearly humans have some sort of need/desire/retort to reward failure over and over and over again, ad ..read more

Forgotten Geek: 3 Giant Robots You Forgot About

Josh
Friday
9:14 pm

With the giant robot craze burning anew (Transformers 2, the new Robotech movie Tobey Maguire’s backing, and Voltron rumored to be in development), robots are the new Seth Rogen. But the big giant robot first bared his steely, one-piece teeth back in the 80s. To honor robots old and new, here are a few biggies you probably forgot about.

3. DV-8 from Crash and Burn

Weighing in at No. 3 on our list, the DV-8 was the overhyped giant robot from the 1990 megaflop, “Crash and Burn.” The movie was set in 2030, and concerns a band of rebel heroes who operate a television station.

The plot thickens when a government synthetic human ..read more

Star Trek Experience reopening confirmed

Jason
Friday
3:02 pm

SciFi Wire is confirming that the once thought lost Star Trek Experience in fabulous Las Vegas will be reopening to coincide with the opening of the new Star Trek film. After fist over fist of money and forced to close its doors at the local Hilton, it will move to the end of the strip to feature as part of the overhaul of the area.

At this point at least a new restaurant and retail shop are planned. But I know there is a large contingent of fandom that wants to see Quark’s Bar return.

Anyone up for a trip to Vegas the first part of ..read more

Friday Top 5: Late Night Talk Shows

Jason
Friday
12:31 pm

This week for the Friday Top 5 I present for your scrutiny my top late night television talk shows. With Conan ending last week, Jimmy moving into his place next week and Jay taking a huge jump from late night to primetime next season, I felt it appropriate to take a look at the landscape and what has been.

5) The Arsenio Hall Show (1989-1994) – Things that make you go hmmmmmm. Sure Hall wasn’t over produced, nor was he on one f the big three networks. Matter of fact his show was simply syndicated and ran late night. For me it was on that young FOX network. But The Arsenio ..read more

I know Force Unleashed wasn’t even a glimmer in the eye of the Star Wars universe back in 1977, but you get the feeling that what is portrayed in the game is an adequate representation of what a Jedi purge would be like.  No stone left unturned, the use of the best of the best to hunt them down and an empire that would not stop until all the Jedi were extinguished.

So here are two questions:

1. Why did Obi Wan Kenobi think that by merely changing his first name to Ben he could evade the purge and never be found? It’s not like he was hiding his last name; the ..read more

300 makes me smile.  I can’t help it, it just does.  I almost didn’t watch it because of all the tales of blood and gore. I like a good amount of blood and guts, but not tons and tons.  However, it was playing in IMAX.  What’s a geek girl to do?  I went and then went again, and again.  I was at 1200 before it left the IMAX theater (300 x 4 = 1200, yep I’m that geeky).  I even have my own 300 metal lunchbox complete with thermos.  Sadly, I work from home so I very rarely have a chance to actually pack my lunch in it.  If I ..read more
