Last night’s entertainment…Star Trek IV

Occasionally I am the lucky recipient of the stay at home Friday night. This Friday it was because I was watching my son as my wife was working. So outside of bumping around on the interweb, I threw the television on in the background. And what did my channel finger stop on? Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
It has been quite some time since I watch any of the Star Trek movies, even longer if they are from the original series. So I thought why the hell not? After all the last time I recall seeing Star Trek IV I was having a grand ole time in a bar on 6th Street in Austin, TX (thank you Chuggin’ Monkey!). So I think it was something like I could watch the picture but the sound was supplemented by the music of the night which I believe was something very technoish.
And after spending two hours watching Kirk and Spock galavant 1980s San Francisco, I can understand why the music covered the dialogue and I hadn’t taken the time to watch the movie since probably the first time I had watched it. The whole movie was basically a kick to the gorram gonads of every Trekker and Sci Fi lover out there. Gone was space and space ships and even more notably the frakin’ Enterprise. Hell even Kirk didn’t even really get to sex up the lady friend of his. But joy! I get to see Spock in a toga of the future.
And then there was the plot. Humpback whales need to be brought to the future to repopulate the species or else the universe as we know it will go away. All I can do is hang my head in disbelief as they actually spent more than $20 to make this movie. It really bodes well for me wanting to rewatch Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Fun fact: Query any non-geek girl, and ask her what her favorite Star Trek movie was. She is only biologically capable of answering one of two ways:
A: “I’ve never seen a Startrack movie.”
B: “The one with the whales.”
Again, guaranteed.
Am I the only one who liked this Star Trek movie? Though my favorite has to be the one where the Next Generation crew goes back in time… That’s all I remember…
Eh, I love this movie.
I am so geekified there’s no hope of redemption.
Then again, I not only own, but have in fact bought for others, Shatner’s “Incubus,” the only movie ever penned in Esperanto. And I like it. Plus, I work out to his CD “Has Been” on a regular basis. Shatner can do no wrong–and that includes Star Trek IV. Shame on you, Jason!! >;)
The Shat can do no wrong. Can you say that in Esperanto?
No, but I could say something else in Esperanto…. >;)
*sigh* I miss “Boston Legal.” With no more appearances in Star Trek, and no Denny Crane to create week after week, the Shat has only his interview show to keep him in the public eye these days. Whatever happened to “Free Enterprise 2″?
Incidentally, Shatner is probably the only actor alive who could get me to ever go to Mountain-Con again. (I gave up on CONduit years ago.) Did you hear that, Bill? The future of my local con-going experience rests in your hands.
I too am a big fan of this movie. Whenever I lose something, I always cover with “Ve are looking for nuclear vepons!”
Hee: I do that, too!
I went through a phase where I talked to my Mouse ala Scotty. I stopped when I realized that’s how the government hears you.
It’s like Xmas!!! Wikipedia just shared something exciting—and ultimately terrifying as well–with little ol’ me:
“In 2007, a ballet called Common People, set to Has Been, was created by Margo Sappington (of Oh! Calcutta! fame) and performed by the Milwaukee Ballet. Shatner attended the premiere and filmed the event. The filmed footage eventually turned into a feature film called William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet, due out in 2009.”
i’m with Josh on the Scotty thing.
Only he managed to stop.
Computer, off.
