Next Wheel of Time book release date set?

Fans of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series are abuzz with rumor as Tor Publishers may have inadvertently leaked the release date of the twelfth book in the series, November 3, 2009. A Memory of Light was supposed to stand as the final edition to the series, proclaimed by Jordan himself.

Sadly Jordan passed before he was able to finish the last volume, with the torch passing to Brandon Sanderson to complete the epic tale of The Dragon Reborn and his battle against the Dark One. A November completion date seems rather lofty considering that Sanderson blogs about his progress quite frequently and has never indicated he was anywhere close to finishing the novel.

However, Sanderson has said he has done some rather extensive edits to get the first half of the book in working order. Combine that with the leak of the widget which counts down to the release date of A Memory of Light. And multiply that with the fact that Sanderson has said there will be a large announcement at JordanCon concerning the book. And what do you get? Rabid internet rabble that the first half of the book will be released in November.

But alas the last book was supposed to be the last book right? Given that there were predictions of a 1500 page novel, I see nothing wrong with throwing out half of that and then completing the series. Besides if anyone knows anything about The Wheel of Time, 13 is a very significant number and it is only fitting that it end on 13.

But then again George R.R. Martin was supposed to release A Dance with Dragons like four times now only to be pushed back again. This time, it is said to be released on September 29, 2009.

Reader Comments

I have always expected the first half of the book in November 2009, and the last half in November 2013.

Oh, that’s right: he did say he’d release the books close together if he had to go with two, right?

Yeah… right.

OK, so I’m exaggerating: George R. R. Martin has made me bitter. It will probably only take Sanderson until November 2011 to finish the thing.

I am alright with Martin being so flaky, gives me time to catch up.

Here I am always thinking I need to find the time to write fiction but can’t. All I really need is to find the time for one book, and then I can do the convention circuit for the next decade while I screw around with the second…. Writing has become so laid back.

As for the symbol, it does seem odd. I don’t tend to think of snakes as joiners, and certainly not as volunteers. In the end, I guess everyone and everything needs to belong to something.

So…is this the next geek thing that you guys are going to get me into? I mean, I completely blame you for BSG, Firefly, Munchkin, RPG, Wii and my Mii…I’m sure there is other geekiness I could include here…Anyway, okay, I’m planning my reading process to get through the series right after I wipe away the tears from Biggest Loser. Geek I may be. But softy – always and eternally.

I’d really recommend reading the series, it does get a little long-winded in the later books, but all in all it is a very good series. And I cannot wait to read this, I’ve been waiting two years…

I am not putting a lot of eggs in this basket. If anything I think they will release a prologue and perhaps the first chapter of the book through eBook much like Jordan did in the past. Something to whet the appetite. Now the key would be to get the book out in a timely fashion after that.

Well, you guys were partly right. As of November 2009, only one third is released(The Gathering Storm), and by the time we read the whole last book, it will be fall 2011…But that wouldn’t mean it wasn’t finished before that.
