Way too late: Battlestar Galactica finale

Well I did it. I was able to remain relatively spoiler free (I caught a very small one that was pretty obvious) until last night for the finale of Battlestar Galactica. We can all now pause to shed a tear as it leaves the airwaves and as we realize there is nothing available to take its place.
So over two hours of BSG to send it off. And after those two hours I was sitting there wishing they would have ended it after the first hour. Spoilery talk after the jump…
I mean really. Did we need to see them gallivanting around on the open plains of what they will call Earth. I still have more questions that I want answered that were just left hanging there. Or perhaps I am just a bit confused. What exactly is the deal with Starbuck? And that whole mess with Baltar and Caprica Six? How does an advanced society not have any affect on nomad tribes? And how the frak did those same nomad tribes never see a Raptor dropping 40,000 people off on the planet? Did I really need to see Bill Adama upchuck all over himself? What the frakkin’ frak was up with all those inane flashbacks that had nothing to do with anything?
Oh well. The first hour was some great television though. Action and effects, its all you ever wanted from BSG. And despite its somewhat lackluster ending for me, BSG will always be that show. A new bar has been erected. It was the show that actually brought me back to science fiction. Thank you Battlestar Galactica.
And I must say that the end sequence where they covered our world’s existing robots and artificial intelligence was quite poignant and sent a few shivers up my spine.
And from that, we now get three new offerings from SyFy (blech). The first will be a two hour television movie that will bring us more BSG. A story called “The Plan” that will tell a story from the Cylon eyes. We also get two new series, Caprica and Stargate: Universe. Out of the two, SGU definitely had the stronger preview. Caprica left me scratching my head. Not exactly sure how that show will be anything like BSG was, even with the last name Adama.
Take a bow Battlestar Galactica, you will be missed.
And here are some clips of the upcoming goodies from SyFy (still blech)…

Leoben, D’Anna, Daniel??? Way to not wrap up anything, losers.
And I’m with you on the flashbacks, they were there to let us see how everyone ended up surviving the initial attack, but that’s not something I was ever curious about.
And why am I supposed to care about Hera? The Adamas aren’t going to live together? And the whole, “robots will turn on us” is nothing new… boring. While I’m here burning this show down, the CG was weak, as was giving up technology, BOO!
Way super disappointing, the only good to come of the final season for me, was that it makes me not miss BSG…
My thoughts are pretty much in tune with Johnny’s—what thoughts I have been able to formulate at this point, anyway. The whole thing left me feeling so cold and distant toward BSG that I haven’t even really been able to put my feelings into words.
How could I forget Daniel. That was only like the juiciest plotline ever mentioned outside of the final five, and yet they just let it be a quick mention.
Agreed on all counts. While I appreciated that they really, truly tied up the series and left it not open to any possible continuation (except for these: http://geek6.com/?p=1523), the whole “everything is because God wants it to be that way” thing is way too easy of a deus ex machina.
I also think the show started to collapse a little under its own weight. As much as I loved the advanced character arcs and changing nature, I do miss me some “Starbuck is a hotshot, devil-may-care pilot and Apollo is her by-the-books CAG” cliché action.
You know, the only thing that touched me emotionally was Adama losing Roslin. That’s the only couple that worked for me from beginning to end in BSG.
I used to be a big Starbuck/Apollo supporter, but TPTB screwed with them so much I simply did not care anymore what happened to them. I didn’t even really care about them as individuals, to be honest, which is saying something because Starbuck was my favorite character in the beginning—by far.
And Tigh and Ellen? Please!
Then we have the Chief and Adama, who decide to go off and live by themselves. O… kay. And don’t even get me started on Baltar and Six. Apparently, her “I’ve changed but you haven’t” was overcome by his last-ditch effort to be a human being. Let’s just forget that he remained a womanizer and a scheming, self-absorbed git for four seasons, shall we?
This is a big part of what left me cold: the people and their relationships.
Yeah, that would be my number-one issue, even over all the plot holes and story lines left hanging: I didn’t care anymore about the characters. And if I don’t care about the characters, how can I care what happens to them (especially when what happens them amounts to one, giant PTB copout)?
After reading all of your BSG blogs…I’ve come to the conclusion that I really don’t want to think too deeply about all the bilge that got left out. It might tarnish my love of this show, and I’d hate to lose that. There’s so few shows to love anymore.
So surface level, it was an enjoyable couple of hours and I’m glad they found Earth, but how in the world did all of OUR Earth’s constellations lead them to the wrong frakking Earth? Big bunch of cheaters…
Even with all my demanding questions, it was still the best out there in the genre…well except for Firefly which I will gladly put in a different genre (space western!) so they don’t go head to head.
BSG doesn’t rank quite as high for me, but I loved the show all the same. I really did.
Autumn keeps reminding me that the dvd edition is suppose to have a lot more content. I’m curious to see if tweaks my impression of the finale.
