I return from beyond

Ahhh life. Life without internet. Life without video games. Life interacting with other people. Yes, that is exactly what I did, and so can you. It is not that scary,  I promise. The big yellow thing in the sky is called the sun. It is good for you. Well as long as you do not stare directly at if for prolonged periods of time or stand under it for prolonged periods of time.

So this past weekend, the family headed out for a long vacation weekend. Destination of choice? Zion National Park. And the computer was purposely left at home. No worries, though, we stayed in a hotel. And it was good to be away from the enthrall of geekdom.

I started the trip thinking I might document the vacation through the Geek’s Eye. But that quickly went away as large trees, waterfalls and cliffs swallowed my mind. Matter of fact, really the only link to geekdom I can say I had (and it is a very weak link) were the two late night movies we watched after getting back in from hiking for six hours. Those two movies? 27 Dresses (Roswell’s Katherine Heigl and X-men’s James Marsden) and Baby Mama (with America’s favorite GeekGirl Tina Fey). Hey it was the only thing on that fuzzy HBO channel. Plus I had not seen either…it was the only thing on!

But forget about that. I just want to share what is out there. See you this week back a GeekSix as I get back into the swing of things.

Ah, now see: here I was thinking you were crazy, but I see now that you stayed in a hotel. I can get behind that. I’m all for nature—until it’s time for bed.

I love that third pic. It makes me want to go back there. I haven’t been to Zion since I lived in Utah the first time, about 25 years ago.

I’m headed out there with the family next weekend. I don’t know that I’ll be able to cut the ties with sweet lady laptop, though. I won’t be taking it out on the trail, but come evening, it can still be nice to curl up with a movie…

I live that 3rd one too. Reminds me of Scotland!

“I love Zions.”
Me too! Did you know they’re currently offering an Internet savings account with 2.17% APY? Awesome, huh?
“Your pictures make me yearn to go back.”
Those pictures do also remind me of the nearby Springdale Branch of Zions Bank. It’s pretty small, and the ATM is not drive-up, but it’s still a nice little bank. I had a savings account there once (I lived in Rockville). Back then, Zions was one of the few banks that dispensed $10 bills at its ATMs. Sadly Zions eventually joined the others making $20 the minimum.

Hmmm, okay. Clarification before someone starts wondering…the name of the park is actually “Zion National Park.” Not Zions. That’s the bank. Should I apologize for the rude sarcasm of other people?

Oh, sorry about that. Us Rockvillans do occasionally forget that it is common among you Northern Utahns to refer to Zion with the name of a bank.

I’ve heard that Daylight Saving Time tends to make some people ornery until their internal clocks adjust….

(For those of us in the north: note that it is in fact “Saving” and not “Savings.” I don’t think the bank has anything to do with the confusion there, though.)

*sighs heartily* I’m kind of wishing I’d typed “Zions” just for the hell of it now.

Well, jest or not that is a pretty good APY for a savings account, although it should be noted that it requires a $1,000 minimum for that rate of return. Then again, Chase offers a measly 0.1 APY while Wells Fargo offers an even worse 0.05 APY.

Oh, and yes, yes, the park is pretty or something, I want to have its babies and live there for ever and ever the end.
