jemcon_2009_postcard_smallJemCon 2009:  Magic in Motown.  Detroit, MI.  September 26-27.  Dolls, cosplay, and even some of the voice actors.  I was a Jem watching child of the 80s.  And while I can neither confirm or deny, for legal purposes, the complete series just may reside on my dvd shelf.   I have to admit that I have wanted to dress up like Jem with my sister April as Synergy.  She wants to wear a leotard and lots of purple eyeshadow and walk around with her eyes closed.  And I want to wear those earrings and whisper things like, “Oh no Synergy!  Rio can’t see me here!”  I wonder if they LARP at this con?  Jason?  Josh?  Because a Jem LARP would be the only way you could actually convince me to LARP.

Generation gap alert! Generation gap alert! All hands on deck.

Er…. Needless to say, I was too old when Jem came along to do more than roll my eyes at it.

I am fascinated, however, by the concept of a JemCon. I think that even were I to learn something new about geekdom every day of my life for the rest of my life, still I would not have cataloged all the ins and outs of being a geek.

And, oh my…. Looking at some of the pics of the long-in-the-tooth, wig-wearing attendees at the masquerade, I realize that perhaps I wasn’t technically too old for Jem when it was out after all….

Amber — I was a touch too old, too. But my little sister dug it. And you’re right, Christy. I approve of Jem LARPing/cosplay.

This con is truly…truly…outrageous. As such, I demand video when you return.

I don’t think I’ll be attending, not sure if I’ll be fully recovered from DragonCon by then. Oh how I wish I knew about this last year when it was in LA.

Christy, for all of us Jem loving, Misfit hating gals who do not live where cool things happen, you HAVE to go to this!

Ugh… I’m starting to feel really out of place here XD

I can’t even lie and say I just wasn’t into it… I wasn’t even a thought in my parents head…

Don’t worry Nick, Jem transcends all time. My niece and nephews watched the series last summer on a road trip. Here’s a little intro to entice you.

Yes, it really is that fabulous. I’m surprised Boomerang doesn’t air them. Along with such goodies as Beverly Hills Teens.

It’s funny, I know that I watched Jem in the mornings before school but I can’t tell you anything about the show. In fact, my only memory is that I was watching it on a little black-and-white portable TV when the Whittier quake struck in 1987.

I suppose that makes this memory … wait for it … truly outrageous. I’m kidding — it’s not an outrageous memory at all.

For me Jem was always about the music. My favorite episode will always be “The Talent Search” when Aja leaves the group to become a fashion designer for a movie and they introduce Raya. Meanwhile The Misfits (who always had better music) decide to add a new member and pick up the Brit Jetta who blows a mean saxaphone….Opps Im sorry I geeked all over your page….
