New Wii MotionPlus lets you play Tennis, Golf or Tennis

Ever since my wife sold a kidney, performed a daring cat burglary and pummeled a sea of 10 year-olds to score me a Wii during the Great Console Rush of ‘07, I’ve been a pretty staunch defender of the system.
But Nintendo keeps finding ways to push my defense to the breaking point. Take the aforementioned MotionPlus addon for the Wii. This little gizmo is going to make the controller REALLY motion sensitive, not just a little motion sensitive. And, of course, Nintendo says it’ll be a revolution. Again.
But, after Nintendo fooled me once with the Balance Board and lack of any interesting games, I’m going in fairly skeptical of their MotionPlus adapter. Here’s why:
Launch titles: The trend of mostly-crappy games continues. Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort (which features such exciting mini-games as Frisbee and sword fighting) won’t ship for two months after the MotionPlus’ debut. So what can you play with your new little plastic nugget? Sega’s Virtua Tennis, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and EA’s Grand Slam Tennis.
Price: The MotionPlus addon ships in a giant box (see below) and sells for $20. Sure, $20 isn’t a ton of money, but when you count that, in order to play most games, you’ll need a controller ($50), a nunchuck attachment ($20) and now the MotionPlus ($20), and you’re up to a Benjamin in click-together widgets for your controller.
That &$#@ing prophylactic: I’m guessing that legal reasons forced Nintendo to release a longer version of that annoying rubber sleeve that retains sweat and grossness like a gym locker. But I don’t like it, and have two knotted up controller condoms parked permanently on the bottom shelf of my entertainment center.
Am I coming down too hard on the Nintendo crew? Is it better that Nintendo fixed their oversight later, and not never?

The thing I like best about my Wii is how well it collects dust.
Because that’s about all I use it for.
Yeah, unfortunately, that’s about all mine has been good for lately, except for playing Mario Kart with my daughter.
The Wii: never had it, never will. I’m sure it’s a blast for those who are into gaming units, though. Just don’t get me started on the whole concept of the Wii Fit….
That’s just it, Amber: It hasn’t been much of a blast for me. It was fun playing tennis with three other people for awhile, and Mario Kart is a consistently fun thing if you have 10 minutes to kill, but I’ve gotten tired of the lack of good games.
There are only so many gimmicky minigames I can handle, and good, gamery, toothy titles are really hard to come by.
I get that. Other people seem to really like it, though. Or, hmmm…. The more I think on it, they seem to like it for a couple of months and then it starts collecting dust.
Personally, if I want to golf or play tennis, I just go and do it. If I want to box, I find someone who is pissing me off to practice on for a little while. OK, that last might be a stretch. But if I want to play Mario Kart I just get in the giant carts at Costco and let Dave shoot me around the parking lot for a while.
I realize that you can’t really golf in the winter in Utah, but given that I never find myself with a desire to golf, anyway, that suits me just fine.
Don’t knock golfing, I waste many an hour doing just that. And when the son is old enough to swing a club, he will…..if he wants to that is.
No worries. Just because I don’t have any interest in golf doesn’t mean I don’t understand why others do. And hey, even I can watch Tiger Woods.
I’m kind of wary of MotionPlus… If they don’t release a Sword-fighting title within months of it being released I will be one really unhappy camper. Right now the only games I’m playing are Metroid Prime 3 and SSBB… Oh and Ocarina of Time on Virtual Console…
I need to swing a freakin’ sword!
