Why is Bones so good?

So today I get a sick day. Went to the doc, she said cold, not swine flu. But me being the nice guy that I am decided not to infect my workmates and stay at home. So right now I am on rest and liquids and catching up on my Hulu queue. And as I get through the queue I realize I have been watching a lot of Bones lately.
The nice thing about Hulu is that while do post the most recent episodes of the series, they are going through the first season as well. I was never able to watch the first season because I believe I was always working.
But what is it about Bones that makes it so good? I am not the type of guy who likes crime procedural series. I don’t like CSI or any of the other cop shows. Really the only two shows I do watch that fall into this are Psych and Bones.
And as I sit here and think why it is, I think it is because Bones adds in just the right amount of geekdom for me to like it. Rattling off the top of my hea, here are just a few things to justify this:
- David Boreanaz – Angel himelf
- At one point Bones dressed as Wonder Woman
- Science. While it doesn’t work for CSI, for some reason it does for Bones
- Zack
- John Francis Daley – will always be the kid from Freaks & Geeks

Add in all that, plus the humor, plus the chemistry between Booth and Brennan, and I think I may have answered my own question.

“Bones”…. I watch it. I like it. I think it’s cute. But Brennan’s character is so out there socially that I see it more as “cute and harmless” than anything I’m head-over-heels for. No one has come up with an argument yet that makes me buy that she would really be as clueless as she often is. She doesn’t have Aspergers. She understands human nature enough to be a bestselling author. And yet… It all just doesn’t quite add up.
And don’t get me started on how goofy they’re making Booth these days.
But all that said, like I said, I watch it—and I don’t watch a whole heck of a lot. The characters are endearing, the relationships are charming and it’s just good fun at the end of the day.
I got my best friend hooked on this show, too, and he doesn’t watch anything crime related.
Asperger’s, not Aspergers…. It’s really a good thing Brennan doesn’t have that, too, since I’ve seen that so recently used on both “Boston Legal” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” (The guy on BL won an Emmy for his work: he deserved it, too.) I’m glad Brennan has her own, special issues with which to deal. But I still have a hard time buying sometimes that she’s as unable to “get” people as she is meant to be.
Hmm. I might have to give it a try. I’d dismissed it as a crime procedural with a touch of quirk, but maybe it’s more.
I’m guessing it’ll fit into the same slot as “Burn Notice” for me: harmless, fun, but not must-see.
I admit I watch a lot of quirky crime procedurals: NCIS, Castle, Bones, and to a lesser degree both Monk and Psych. I also watched CSI: Las Vegas until Grissom exited stage left because I liked the quirkiness of that show, too. It wasn’t dark like CSI: New York or as serious as CSI: Miami.
I don’t know why I am so drawn to this kind of thing. I mean, sure, part of it is that I don’t have to catch every episode. It’s hard for me to find the time for that. But I think the biggest part of it may be that I’m really intrigued by the dark underbelly of the human psyche but I like to have that tempered with humor, fun and genuinely likable people who really care for one another.
Oh, yeah, and I love the science. Love it. Love it. Love it. I can’t get enough of the gadgets and lab work and lingo.
“CSI: Miami” is serious?
It’s cheesy and predictable with horrible acting,
but in no way has it ever been serious. The last episode was a spoof of The Bachelor for crud’s sake. One of it’s characters has a bullet in his brain. And it allows David Caruso to keep cashing a check. It’s a total train wreck. Which, of course, is why I watch.
I was just watching the new NCIS episode this morning, and at one point their computer guru is checking out some of the high-tech mumbo-jumbo they have in their LA office and he says, “We so need to get this stuff.” I totally understood that. It was awesome! I don’t even need to keep tabs on undercover agents and I wanted some of that stuff, too.
CSI: Miama takes itself more seriously than CSI: Las Vegas. Cheesy or no, it doesn’t have the quirk of its progenitor.
Then again, these days CSI: Las Vegas also takes itself too seriously—which is part of the reason I no longer watch. It was a quirkier show in bygone days.
From what I understand, the first season of Bones is its weakest. The character chemistry all really came together starting in the second season.
You are right, Booth is a little more silly nowadays. Watching back to back episodes from this season and the first it really was evident. But I think Boreanaz can pull off goofy but can easily turn it on a dime. Writers just have to write a bit more serious. But after Gormagon last season, I can understand why they may be taking a break.
I couldn’t get into it in Season One, both because I was typically busy when it was on and because it just didn’t pull me in. I haven’t gone back to watch the first season, either. I’m happy just continuing on from the point at which I went, “Hey, I actually like this show!”
I’ve liked Bones since I first saw the first season, though I’ve been missing an episode now and again recently, due to conflicting series.
If you miss an episode, Nick, you can always catch it on Hul…
… oh, wait.
Bones is one of the must watch shows for my wife and I. I love that despite the serious nature of some of the cases, the show and characters don’t take themselves too seriously. Thus, it’s nice quirkyness.
And the good news is that Bones is not one of the oodles of shows on the bubble for renewal right now. It’s a given for next season.
There’s also good news about this season’s finale, so I hear….
I just love the Bones can completely gross me out and make me laugh several times in one episode. I’ve actually loved every season and must admit, I’ve seen every episode. I do get frustrated with how clueless Brennan can be…but it just adds to humor. I love crime dramas, CSI, Criminial Minds, Numbers…you name it, I love it. But this is the one that cracks me up, so I can watch episodes over and over. Plus, this season they are using a bunch of interns to replace Zack…and the quirkiness of each one kills me. I love the British guy with all the random facts. And the scary Emo guy.
