Why the Star Trek prequel is converting me

So, you’ve heard about the surprise unveiling of the Star Trek reboot the other night, right? A bunch of fans showed up at the Alamo Draft House expecting to see The Wrath of Khan, and instead Nimoy and company were there to screen the whole shebang for them. And reaction has been really good. Not perfect, but really good, considering the famous nitpickiness of Trek fans.
And, now that things have leaked, the company is starting to post several clips on the Web. Add the clips and early fan support/buzz, and I’m starting to really come around. A few of these clips show some of the classic Trek ideals stepped in the origin-story-meets-bromance-and-explosions we were all waiting for.
Spock meets Scotty and Kirk for the first time:
Uhura meets Kirk in a seedy bar:
And finally, a third one to watch, McCoy meets Kirk (courtesy of Slashfilm): (You’ll have to click the link and scroll down for it.)
Watch, and let us know what you think!

Eek when I see Spock I cannot stop seeing Sylar.
They really didn’t have to convert me. And that is because I don’t get all wanked up on continuity to the point that I want to burn down houses. That and unlike the old Uhura, I find this one kinda hot.
I think of Sylar, too. And that’s not good, considering “Heroes” went from cool show to just
plain awful.
Spock meeting Kirk for the first time is neat.
But my favorite Kirk “first time” moment is still
when drank beer in “The One with the Whales.”
Yeah, I hear you on the Sylar thing. But well get over it. I loved “Heroes” in the first season, but never glommed back onto it after that, and I’m glad for it.
Oh, I’m over it. That’s not what would stop me from seeing the new film.
What I need to really get past is that creepy bug-in-the-ear scene in either the first or second movie.
Blech.
“But… keptin… dey put… tings… in our ears…”
I loved the first and last videos, I didn’t get to see the second… Anyways I’m really excited for the movie it seems like it will be great!
Ditto everything Jason said—even the part about the new chick being hot, though that isn’t a selling point for me. >;) I have been looking forward to this movie since the word “Go,” potential for Star Trek 90210 horribleness notwithstanding. And I don’t think the Sylar thing would bother me, regardless, but the fact is I don’t watch “Heroes,” so the point is moot.
I know: you’re all shocked. “Amber doesn’t watch a show about modern-day superheroes?!? How can it be?”
How confounding….
Its not the possibility of Star Trek 90210 happening…it is One Tree Trek happening.
I’m just glad I’m not the only one still disturbed by the things in the ears. I still have nightmares about them. And though not related, has made me always feel a special hatred for earwigs. blech! I’m sometimes amazed at how movies we watched as kids still affect us. Like my somewhat squeamish feelings towards fried chicken and the song “Do you Hear What I Hear” because of Gremlins.
I’ve never seen One Tree Hill, Jason, so I wouldn’t know. Apparently, you have….
I have seen 90210, but hey, I was a teenager. It was the thing to do.
The bug-in-the-ear thing never bothered me. I had an earwig in my ear once, and I ate half of one that had wriggled into a Fig Newton once. But thinking about earwigs still doesn’t bother me. Seeing them crawl across the floor, on the other hand…. Nothing that moves like that can be good.
I’ve chosen to not watch any of the video. I’ve seen one of the trailers and that’s as far as I’ll go before May 8.
And this of course makes me kick myself for moving away from Austin. Gods Damnit! You know I totally would have been in that crowd!
I suspect the Sylar thing wouldn’t bother me even were I a fan of “Heroes” because the match to Nimoy is so spot on that the actor can only be Spock to me in this movie.
So I am confused. Where does this fall into the Star Trek timeline. I Thought that the Series Enterprise Captain Archer was the first one to fly the Enterprise.
Alamo Drafthouse…how I miss thee…let me count the ways…beer, pizza, food while watching, Firefly marathon, LotR marathon (with all meals), Texas winning the national championship…I could honestly go on forever. I want my Drafthouse.
Leitha — It’s complicated. J.J. Abrams has described this as a reboot, and because of the nature of the plot (which involves a little time travel), it’s basically a way to say, “Whatever you think happened, didn’t, because it’s all different now.”
That said, Archer wasn’t the first person to captain the Enterprise 1701 — he was generations before, and it was the NX-01. Technically, the first captain of the 1701 was either April or Pike, depending on whether you include the novels as canon.
Holy crap — I can’t believe I know that stuff. Where did it come from? I’m like the Chuck of Star Trek knowledge — someone must have put a chip in my head. Quick — someone ask me something else!
What exactly was Barclay’s function in TNG?
Whoa Jason I am impressed. Now I know who to go to with my deep Enterprise questions. lol
