Friday Top 5: Michael Jackson Songs

As we all know, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, passed away yesterday at the age of 50. It has been quite some time since a celebrity passing had tugged at my heart strings like this did.
See, growing up my circle of friends listened to Mike. Every new album he put out we go. In third grade I sang “We are the World” with my class. The first album I owned was the Michael Jackson E.T. soundtrack. The first cassette that I could call truly mine was Thriller.
So needless to say, MJ was a big part of me growing up. Sure the last decade has been rough on him and his name has been drug through the mud, but my memories will lie with him previous to that.
So in what little tribute I can do, I offer up Michael Jackson’s top five songs in my humble, honest opinion.
Honorable Mention – Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough
Album: Off the Wall
5) Man in the Mirror
Album: Bad
4) The Way You Make Me Feel
Album: Bad
3) Smooth Criminal
Album: Bad
2) Remember the Time
Album: Dangerous
1) Thriller
Album: Thriller
How can Thriller not be number one? Not only did it give us this…
But this…
And this…
And this…
But best of all, this (I was witness to this one)….

Glad to see “Remember the Time” up there.
I was fond of a number of these songs myself. However, I tried listening to them on MTV the other day (I still couldn’t watch the videos: I’ve never really understood the concept of watching music) and found it very difficult. I still listen to a lot of 80s music–it’s among my favorite music to this day–but his repertoire just didn’t hold up for me. I found myself wondering how many people honestly still listen to him regularly. Do you, or was this the first time you’d revisited his legacy in some time?
I did see “Thriller” a few years back on a huge outdoor screen while waiting in line at a haunted house. It had been decades since I saw it last and everyone watching really got a kick out of it. We agreed right there that it should be required viewing at any haunted house. That one will probably live forever–as a part of Halloween if nothing else.
Billy Jean didn’t make the cut?
Shu-mon.
Taking it down to five was way too hard. The man was a musical genius. Billie Jean was definately in the next five though. It was nice spending the weekend listening to way too much Jackson.
And yes Amber, I have a nice collection of MJ on my hard drive which I will listen to from time to time. But then again my hard drive has about 50 days worth of music on it so it is hard to get to everything
He He!
