Which is cooler, being able to walk again after suffering a nasty spinal injury, or having bright blue appendages?
Researchers have given paralyzed mice (I’m sure they accidentally fell down some stairs) the gift of mobility by injecting blue dye. And since Dr. Manhattan-hands are the only side effect, there’s a good chance it will be coming to a human near you.
It’s a similar principle to the controversial method doctors used on Buffalo Bills player Kevin Everett, who was on the brink of dying from a helmet-to-helmet hit. But he ended up walking a few months later. According to this line of research, reducing swelling in the spinal area, ..read more
I know, I’m pretty darn excited. I know, I won’t shut up about it. The preview from Comic Con is available now at the LOTS website and it looks like they’re taking their inspiration of S2’s arc from the second Sword of Truth novel “Stone of Tears.” This excites me. The second half of “Stone” was my favorite thus far in the series, and seeing as how they’ve yet to introduce the mud people the relatively boring first half of “Stone of Tears” will be skipped over. I say relatively boring in the most loving of terms, by the way.
I’m reading “Blood of the Fold” (Book 3 in the ..read more

I hardly ever use my TV anymore.
Maybe it’s the fact that it’s still a non-HD 27″ Sanyo I bought more than 10 years ago. Maybe it’s because we moved it out of the living room and into the basement, so it’s never “on in the background.”
Or maybe it’s because the networks have gotten so good about online viewing. Whether it’s on network sites, Hulu or iTunes, programming choices are deep and current, and I don’t have to mess with a DVR or be in front of the box at a certain time.
My wife and I watch most of our shows via the laptop in bed. Yes, it’s only a 15″ ..read more

I always enjoy quick social experiments. You know a quick question to gauge the current atmosphere, or try to decipher the current trends, or just to get some juicy info on the person you are talking to.
And in an effort to get to know you, our readers o’ GeekSix, I turn to one of my more favorite social experiments. The random music test. Its very simple. I will outline the procedure for those whose learning model is more hands ..read more

Once there was a zombie movie that loved other zombie movies. It was called “Shaun of the Dead.” It had a fan named Autumn.
Now Autumn was just a little zombie fan. The appreciation was there, (due mostly to watching her sister’s boyfriend play Resident Evil II when she was 11) but she did not have much zombie knowledge. As often happens in life, doubt crept into what she knew she liked, and she was misled, misled by the nerds.
So she tried the old things. But colorized black and white movies weirded her out. These were not her zombies.
She remembered her zombies were Popular English Character Actors, ..read more

Deep down within me I harbor the desire to run my own television station. Forget that by me running it, it will probably be the biggest load ever, but it is still something I want to do.
See I have this small piece of me that likes to develop things. Start them from the ground up and see them flourish. I have grandiose visions that such start-ups will lead to success. But, I am grounded enough to know that I have probably have no comprehension of everything needed to do so.
Really where all this television nonsense comes from is my desire to see fantasy television programming in a centralized place. SyFy ..read more

Over the weekend, my wife and I set out to replace our once-trendy, but now child-worn and drooping couches. Our voyages took us to classy furniture stores and bargain huts filled with both the desperation of commission-based salespeople and the gaping void of self-help big boxes.
One particular place had a bargain basement which was like a time portal into the early ’90s. All of the furniture decked out in pine and hunter green accents.
I knew that I’d really stumbled across a find when I ran across an old IBM PS/2 Series 30, its once-proud beige corpse pressed into sad final service as a fake piece of office furniture.
My wife was ..read more

Ridley Scott’s game-changing “Alien” movie is 30 years old this year. In the time since his movie famously pitched a blue-collar space future, the franchise has seen highs (”Aliens”) and lows (anything with “vs.” or “resurrection” in the title).
The franchise has also dropped more video game adaptations than Hudson dropped f-bombs. While more than a dozen titles officially exist, I’m only going to give you the cream of the crop. Below, the best 5 ways to get your “Alien” fix in retro gaming.
5. Aliens, the arcade game
The Aliens arcade game followed the movie’s plot as best an arcade game can. The 16-bit graphics had you playing Ripley (or ..read more

Growing up we always had a closet full of board games. From the simple to the advanced. And even as I moved into high school, I didn’t mind passing the time with a good game or two, here and there.
And even now, as I grow a bit older, the closet still has a large amount of games, both old and new. I have dabbled into some new games to me, in Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, and found another that has become a staple on game night, Munchkin.
But then there are those games that seem to be the tentpole of games that everyone swears by. They are long, ..read more

There are two things I keep hearing when the subject of the Warcraft movie comes up during H2O chiller banter.
1. WTF, a Warcraft movie? Only nerds like that game!
2. WTF, Sam Raimi? Why is he wasting his time on a video game movie?
Here are my answers, which i explain after breaking a 20-gallon jug over their head:
1. WoW is like marijuana. Everybody talks shit about it and says nobody should imbibe in it, but when it comes down to it 90% of the people talking down about it play it/ use it. Sort of a “do as I say, not as I do” mentality that both keeps others from looking ..read more
