Are You My Zombie?

Once there was a zombie movie that loved other zombie movies.  It was called “Shaun of the Dead.”  It had a fan named Autumn.

Now Autumn was just a little zombie fan.  The appreciation was there, (due mostly to watching her sister’s boyfriend play Resident Evil II when she was 11) but she did not have much zombie knowledge.  As often happens in life, doubt crept into what she knew she liked, and she was misled, misled by the nerds.

"If you like things you should try the old things" says Nerdy Man with Awesome Shirt

So she tried the old things.  But colorized black and white movies weirded her out. These were not her zombies.

colorized purple sky bewildered her!

She remembered her zombies were Popular English Character Actors, so she watched 28 Days Later.

She liked that is was the hippies fault.

but fast moving rage zombies destroyed her faith in humanity

These were not her zombies.

She remember her zombies were funny, so she watched Fido.

"I love you more than my emotionally stunted husband, Zombie" said the post modern housewife "Aw shucks, ma!" said her son "luuuuuuusssssttttt" said the zombie

fido

this filled Autumn's soul with tonal shift disquiet.

These were not her zombies either.  Shuffling aimlessly past those zombies were Black Sheep.  “That’s kinda like zombies!”  she thought.

So she watched Shaun of the Dead again, and was happy.  These WERE her zombies after all.

Well, if comedy zombie stuff is your favorite, I think you’ll be looking forward to “Zombieland” when it hits theaters October 9th. Did you watch, and if so, how did you feel about any of these zombie flicks: ‘Resident Evil’, ‘Return of the Living Dead’, ‘Day of the Dead’, ‘Night of the Living Dead’ (1990), ‘Land of the Dead’, ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (2004 & 1978).
There’s also a good list of independent zombie movies that look pretty good, but I can’t remember their names, atm (sad face).

The original “Dawn of the Dead” is pretty much zombie comedy, too. I mean, really: ice-skating zombies?

I’ve seen all of these, but I confess that I’ve yet to see a zombie picture that really draws me in. But at least the “28 Days” zombies moved swiftly. Who can possibly be afraid of the typical zombie crawl? And who in their right mind locks themselves into a home with no possible escape route just to flee from mindless, limping, lumbering zombies?

I forgot about “Quarantine”. It had a great concept, but no story. I’d love to see a sequel based on it.
Zombie movies that actually drew me in include ‘28 Days’ and ‘28 Weeks’ for sure, but you’re right about most of the genre lacking on the story or, maybe, the delivery front.
If someone could come into the genre with the same concepts used in “Silent Hill”, “Snatch” and/or “Inglourious Basterds”, that would be fantastic!

Zeb, I was not allowed to watch such movies when I was young so the ones mentioned above are the ones that I’ve seen. One of my friends told me my “Night of the Living Dead” viewing was an epic fail. So obviously I’ve got to fix that. Your problem with quarantine is the one I have with most of the Zombie stuff I’ve seen. I love the idea of it, the genre, and yet always am vaguely unsatisfied with the experience. I love fantasy, yet who can name more than ten awesome fantasy movies or post apocalyptic movies that satisfy on more fronts than merely the idea?

Amber, my boy Drew tells me that 28 Days Later made one Zombie scary. Typical zombies are only scary when they horde, I concur. Otherwise they’re just creepy. And I’ve seen creepier things when I walk home at night. (Don’t worry, I just moved out of that neighborhood).
