Board games that promise fun but require too much work

Growing up we always had a closet full of board games. From the simple to the advanced. And even as I moved into high school, I didn’t mind passing the time with a good game or two, here and there.
And even now, as I grow a bit older, the closet still has a large amount of games, both old and new. I have dabbled into some new games to me, in Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, and found another that has become a staple on game night, Munchkin.
But then there are those games that seem to be the tentpole of games that everyone swears by. They are long, complex and full of strategy. Games could take hours, if not days. And to me, while the premise of these games is sound, and seems like they should be a ball, they are just much too drawn out to jump in, have fun, end the game and go about the rest of your business.
Scotland Yard

I will be upfront about this one, it has probably been two decades since the last time I played the game. But it was so tedious for a 14 year old, that it made me never want to come back to it. It wanted you to work in tandem with the other players in an effort to try and find out just who Mr. X is. Talking? You want a bunch of guys sitting around and try and coordinate strategery? Psshht!
Clue

The line between Clue being fun and being tedious is always a fine one. Many times a game can go on both sides of the line and it just depends on who you are playing with. Most of the time the groups I played with could never agree on the interpretation of the rules which led to some pretty good cheating and some pretty crappy endings. General Jason killed Clue in the solar with his charming wit!
Risk

Risk was a whole new level of game and intricate rules. And I never found it fair that the aggressor was always able to roll more dice than those who are trying to defend. Seemed like a stacked deck to me. All those little pieces, how many units you are rewarded, how many times you can attack. And then there was always that one lucky bastard who was basically handed Australia through the cards they were dealt. You basically needed to plan your whole day around the game, either that you won’t be finishing. And you won’t be coming back to the game even though you save your game board by stashing it in the dining room.
Axis & Allies

If Risk was a new level, Axis & Allies was a whole new planet. To this day I admire those who can trudge through an A&A campaign. Even more if they have purchased the 2,235 expansions and themes to the game. I can honestly say I never actually finished a single game of A&A. Sure we got to the set up, and the beginning, but something usually came up shortly thereafter. Usually food. And food is good.
So there you go. In the end, I probably didn’t have the patience for these games. They probably are fun. But for some reason I could always take an hour or two to play Monopoly, Stratego, Trivial Pursuit or Life.

My newest game I own? Marvel Scene It. Found it at Toys R Us for eight bucks. For some reason no one will play with me.

Two college friends forever ruined Axis and Allies for me. One summer, they spent a month being paid lab rats while taking some experimental drug. They were locked away in a lab dorm the whole time, but they had Axis and Allies. Thus, they were able to boil it down to a science.
When I tried to play the game with them after that, it became a series in prerecorded exercises. “No,” they’d say. “On the four turn, Japan is supposed to move into China,” or “You have to move one aircraft carrier into Bulgaria” or something.
I couldn’t really hear that last part over the sound of all of the pieces clattering to the floor in disgust.
I guess I would suggest avoiding the Battlestar Galactica board game then. 4 hours of game play to only get about half way through. Maybe after a few games with the same people it would speed up due to knowing the rules better, but still.
I have the Battlestar game–unopened. In fact, I have about ten, brand-new, extremely complicated and late-might-requiring games unopened in my storage closet—-there to remain, I suspect. If it were up to me, I’d play. I love board games. But no one I know wants to invest that kind of time in game play. We stick to things like Uno and sci-fi-swear-words-count Scrabble.

I’ve never played any of the games on this list, though I grew up knowing about them. I do, however, own LOTR Risk.
It’s unopened.
O____O
I want it.
Actually, the nice thing about Lord of the Rings Risk, is there’s a built in timer. Once the ring reaches Mordor, the game’s over. Unlike regular Risk, which goes on until you’ve taken over the world.
I’m a homeowner now, which means I have more space than I did for the last ten years while I was crammed into my < 800 sq. ft. apartment. As such, I have now decided to implement Killer Game Day every now and then on the weekend. I'm going to have food and drink and excruciatingly complicated and long-winded games, and whoever has the wherewithal to play one of these never-ending board games will be invited to play the day away.
First, of course, I must finish moving. And unpack. And paint. And change the fixtures. Etc. Etc.
Well, somewhere, out there, in the not-too-distant future, I proclaim… Killer Game Day!
Sadly I think I am a sucker for themed games based on real games. Star Wars Trivial Pursuit ftw!
So all that said, recommendations from anyone on board games I probably have not seen?
Board games you haven’t tried? Well, I can’t read your mind, but here are some of my favorites we sell a lot at my store:
Great two player card game: Lost Cities
Great family game (and actually really cool two player game as well), 45 min., no setup, fun: Carcassonne
Party Game: Luck of the Draw
Great Kids vs. Adults game: Gulo Gulo
Abstract: Yinsh
I could go on (oh, and don’t forget about Set, great card game) and on. Games are great.
I have always wanted to try Carcassonne. And Alhambra. Just need to find time and someone with the game.
And sadly I want Friends Scene It. I have no idea why. No one will play Marvel Scene It with me.
