Casting for Ice & Fire taking shape

Well George RR Martin has lifted a small piece of the veil on the upcoming HBO rendition of his popular A Song of Ice and Fire book series. See HBO is currently casting the pilot episode for The Game of Thrones and has pulled in some heavy hitters to give the series instant credibility.
Having almost finished the third book in the series, A Storm of Swords, I am actually getting a bit pumped to see the finished product here. I really do hope it has the look and feel of The Lord of the Rings on the small screen. Heck the writing lends itself to be.
So here is a quick rundown of who we have cast so far…
Sean Bean as Lord Eddard Stark
That is correct, Boromir will be playing the role of the patriarch of House Stark. Given his acting prowess, Bean should be a slam dunk and bring fan boys to the party. But for as much as everyone loved him as Boromir, I much prefer him as Alex Trevelyan in the James Bond action flick GoldenEye.
Mark Addy as King Robert Baratheon
Most viewers will probably recognize Addy from his role in A Knight’s Tale. While it may not have been the best of movies (it is still a guilty pleasure for me), Addy turned in a great performance with what little he had to work with. Others might remember him from his TV sitcom days on Still Standing or movie The Full Monty.
Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
Playing a short ugly drawf with different colored eyes and weakened legs is never an easy role. But that is the role Dinklage decided to take on with Tyrion. Funny thing is for being possibly the ugliest character, Tyrion sure does get to sleep with a lot of women. And in turn that means Dinklage is sure to be surrounded by some serious boobage.
Kit Harington as Jon Snow
Not much is known about Harington outside of he is thought well of in British theatre circles. That and he has the ringing endorsement of Martin himself. All I know is that Harington better strap in because there is a large contingent of fans ready to pounce on anyone who fills the role of Jon Snow due to the importance of the character.
Jack Gleeson as Joffrey Baratheon
If not much was known about Harington, Gleeson is invisible. Many are assuming this is the kid who had a spot appearance in Batman Begins.
Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen
Lloyd is a pleasant surprise. I watch the BBC’s Robin Hood, but really have not learned any of the actors names. So when I first read Martin’s blog, I had no clue who he was by name. But after digging in, Hood’s Will Scarlett will wear the mantle of The Beggar King. After seeing such a chipper Will Scarlett, I am looking forward to if he can pull off the I am the biggest asshole ever role.
And given the size of the character lot in the books, there is much more casting to be had. Projected airing of the pilot? October. And already I think most can say it is looking better than Legend of the Seeker.

This is awesome news. I am looking forward to this pilot nearly as much as the next book in the series. Unfortunately, Martin has slowed down on this series in recent years. I still have A Feast for Crows sitting on my nightstand–unread since it’s release. I am waiting patiently for the next one to come out before I start.
This series is so far my favorite fantasy series (even over LotR).
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After Battlestar having slaked my sci fi thirst for the time being, I’m elated to have another fantasy on the docket. And since it’s HBO I’m going to say of COURSE it’s going to have a different air than something that is distributed by ABC studios. Nature of the game. Nothing needs to crush nobody.
Hmmm…I’ve been meaning to read these books for quite some time. Now I NEED to start!
Yay! I love Sean Bean, he’s an excellent actor for that kind of role. Surely you mean Boromir and not Baromir though
I’ll have to read those books, I’ve not heard of them before, but they sound awesome.
I’m definitely looking forward to this, and the top three actors there excite me about the project. The bottom three I couldn’t care less about. I just don’t get too drawn into the kid parts of the books, which is par for the course for me.
Shhhh Gaby, it was late! OK it was like 8 pm, but still! *offtofixmistakes*
looks like things are coming along nicely. I can’t wait to see the pilot.
Jon Snow a kid role? I don’t think so missy.
Yeah, I know Snow is supposed a bit older on the teenager scale, but I am not sold on this guy. Not how I have imagined Jon Snow. But I suppose that is why they have clothes and makeup.
And Viserys is not a child. Though everyone in the series is basically a child. Matter of fact Martin creeps me out slightly with his talk of 14 year old girls having sex and losing their maidenhead, or really any time he wants to write about sex which he randomly just sticks in anywhere he wants.
Yeah, Jon Snow is a kid to me. It’s all relative, my friend. >;)
Viserys is also a child in my mind. They’re all kids. The sex thing doesn’t creep me out to much because of the time period, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are kids thrust into the roles of adults.
too, not to
Do we actually know how old Viserys was? I don’t remember reading that. His behavior made me think him pretty young.
As for the look of the kid playing Snow, I see it. It fits with my imagination pretty well.
I suppose Viserys was somewhere between 15-18, on par with Robb, Jon and Theon. Maybe a little older. I dunno. I think he was like 8 when they fled Dragonstone with his mom with Daenerys still in the womb? And Dany was married to Drogo at 14 years old. So that would be 21-22?
That sounds right to me. So, yeah: kids. Sorry: that’s the way I see it. In fact, even as a teenager I saw teens and early 20s as kids.
Well the guy playing Jon Snow looks to me like a “young Jon Snow”, I pictured Jon being at least 2-3 years older…
To me he looks exactly the age he should at the start of the books.
It might just be that you are close to his age. I know I always thought I looked older than I did. When I was a freshmen in college, for example, I thought I looked it. But then the next year I looked around at all the new freshmen and realized they looked very, very young–as did I.
“freshman in college”
Life is frying my brain these days….
