Get my motor running

As I slowly take the long swing around the bend toward getting older, I really am trying to tell myself that I need to stay in shape. Older physically that is, not mentally, as I have been stuck on about 14 years old for a decade…or so I have been told.

In high school and throughout college I did myself a decent favor and stayed active. Matter of fact I can attribute my 0.4 GPA my first semester to spending six hours in the gym running games of basketball rather than sticking my nose in a book or even attending class. I did better my second semester, enough to raise my GPA to a 0.6. They were nice enough to ask me to leave for a little bit for some reason.

All that aside, I was doing something. Basketball, intramurals, golf. Heck I even took second in a campus class tournament playing tennis, going on to later coach the sport. Then I graduated, moved to a small town named Kerrville, TX, and proceeded to become addicted to the internet. Living on my own, working a newspaper job that had me in the office until midnight, 1 am shopping at the only place open at that time, Wal-mart, and sleeping late pretty much made up my life for a year.

Then I decided to head back to school, and proceeded to sit on my butt some more. Somehow during this time I somehow held myself together enough to get engaged. Yeah, that engagement lasted all of four months. But that threw me back into activity. It is how I escaped. Running three to four nights a week  in New Braunfels, TX, combined with some lifting a couple nights out of the week and I was soon on the lean and narrow…well narrow for me.

Then I got engaged again, graduated, got a job with bad hours again. Combine that with my inherent laziness and it has been pretty hard to get myself started again. Last year I took a summer weightlifting class. That almost put me back on the path I needed. But I fell by the wayside. And now here I stand trying to once again push myself, trying to shed about 30 pounds.

Running has always been my exercise of choice. It gets me out. Puts me in my own little world. Music for the journey is always a necessity. Plus you get to smile at all the nice people you pass.

Last week I proudly proclaimed I was going to start waking up at 5:45 am to get my running done in the morning. That lasted all of one time of the alarm going off that early before I turned it off. So not a morning person. Josh called me on it. He said I was setting myself up for disaster. He was right. Crash and burn.

So, today, Monday, new day, new week. New drive. Dinner early. Took a 75 minute run/walk to grab some extra keys for the house. Did it with minimal damage. Over the past few weeks I have made somewhat of an effort to reduce the amount of fat and sodium in my diet. More vegetables. Will continue to do what I can.

Sad thing is I pay eight bucks a month for my campus field house and do not use it. Time to start getting my money’s worth I suppose. Need to work in the weightlifting. That way I can have a sculpted body just like Will Ferrell.

Last sad thing? My graduate degree was in exercise and sports science. I understand nutrition and how the body works. I know the proper procedure for weight loss and how to do it correctly. Just never invested the time. When I dropped those 30 pounds in New Braunfels? Totally threw darts and drank beer ever Thursday night. You can do that as long as you do the other stuff.

So I submit myself to Geek6 and its lashing as a motivator. Your jeers and ridicule will only drive me. That and the PS3 coming my way if I can shed those 30 pounds.

Good times.

Come on, man! I have been lifting weights and doing cardio for 20 years. Twenty years!!!! And I’m older than you. Get off your keister and just do it.

I’ve pretty much cut sugar out of my diet as well. I’m trying to eat very organic these days. Once you have the requisite amount of protein and fiber in your diet, the cravings for junk food really do die. It’s true.

I applaud your efforts, BTW. It’s much easier for me, I know, because I started very young and never stopped. I can’t imagine what it is like to try to restart an exercise and healthy-living program after time has passed.

Oh, and drinking beer and throwing darts while losing weight? You can do that as a younger man. I’d like to see you do it now. >;)

OK, I really wouldn’t: I’m a big proponent of eating healthy. But seriously, diet is the number-one means of fat loss–and this is all the more true as we age and our metabolisms slow. Without eating right, you never do get the kind of results from exercise that you otherwise would.

“Diet” as in a healthy diet, that is. I don’t believe in “dieting” per se. I believe in sustainable weight loss through healthy eating and exercise.

OK, I’m done now. Sorry, this is a mega-huge topic for me.

Someone needs to end Amber’s rampage.

And I’d love to be able to shed some weight (suffice to say I’m fat). Though I’m never able to find time, though hopefully this summer I’ll be able to do something about it.

There is always time. There’s always time to do everything: we just tell ourselves there isn’t. I know: I struggle with this when it comes to my novel.

Yes. There is time. You just have to make it. Late night or early morning it is there. If you choose to sleep, that is a choice you make, not that you don’t have time. But weight loss is a gradual thing. I accept that and have to commit. Anyone has to commit. And for the most part people have to realize it will take upwards of a month before you start really seeing results.
