More Tron news from Comic-Con: Images and viral arcade

The Tron sequel is finally coming together with an impressive sheen of polish. The title, which went from Tron 2 to Tr2n to TRZ and back again, is now “Tron: Legacy,” a much more fitting, if predictable name. Also, the live-action sequences of the movie have all been shot, and the substantial post-production work can begin.

Details of the plot and some concept art emerged at Comic-Con Thursday. As anyone who’s looked at the viral site knows, the movie posits the 1987 disappearance of Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn as reality. Flynn is portrayed as a rogue genius, and the Internet viral theme brings to mind the “Free Kevin Mitnick” pages of the ’90s. The movie will deal with Flynn’s son, Sam, as he follows the trail of his long-lost father.

The world of “Tron: Legacy” is shaping up nicely. Everything has a slick, computer modeled look that’s modern while still harkening back to the source material. This makes perfect sense, as “Tron City” and the programs from the first movie, have all been sitting on an unconnected server for 20 years, so they’ve had time to evolve.

A few of the pieces of concept art shown:

A now-dated second-generation light cycle made by Flynn. Allegedly the "fastest thing on the grid."

Update: The folks at FirstShowing.net have an unbelievably cool account of the real-world-meets-online blending of virality. The countdown timer on Flynn Lives referenced a location and time — if you showed up at those coordinates in San Diego at the designated time, you were treated to a scavenger hunt on the streets of San Diego, which led to another set of coordinates, which in turn admitted you into Flynn’s Arcade (fans of the first Tron will remember this place). It goes on, and culminates in some fantastic easter eggs; read it over here.

Ah, “Tron.” I can’t say I haven’t seen it exactly, since I was in the theater when it was on. But I don’t remember actually watching it. I think my brother and I ran up and down the aisles instead, as we were the only two people in the theater.

So I think this may be the only sci-fi movie from the 80s that I don’t know at all.
