SyFy wants a Firefly-style space opera?

Put me down in the, “I’m squealing like a little girl on the inside, but I’ve been burned before” camp, but io9 landed a great interview with Sci-Fi SyFy’s Creative Director of Original Programming.

Mark Stern pays some really nice lip service to hard-core sci-fi fans, and drops tantalizing hints about wanting to have a marquee space title.

I’m a huge fan of Firefly, and shows that take that idea and take that part of the genre and reinvent it in a whole new way. I’d love to find our version of, not specifically Firefly, but similar to what Joss [Whedon] tried to do with that in terms of, “lets recast the Western in space.” Love that idea, and I love that show. What’s another way to approach that?

Heartening news for fans who are down on “Caprica,” and looking for a solid replacement to fill the BSG void.

NBC Universal owns the Serenity rights. NBC Universal owns SyFy. Done and done. Screw you Fox.

My favorite part of that article?

“What was worse: rebranding, or canceling Stargate Atlantis?”

“Canceling Farscape. Which, by the way, I had nothing to do with. That was my first day at the job and all of a sudden it was, ‘Mark’s cancelled Farscape.’ No, I didn’t. I love Farscape!”

Personally, I’d rather see them do another show along the lines of Farscape. I like the truly bizarre. But I’d be willing to give a second Western in space a shot.

I’m starved for space sci-fi. Give me stock footage of a rocket and a ray gun for 18 minutes, and I’ll be happy.

More space opera, less space soap opera: don’t fail me, Stargate: Universe (and SyFy).

Sorry Jason. I don’t think we’re going to see Firefly launched again. Most of the major actors have major commitments:

Mal> Castle
Inara> V
Wash> V
Jayne> Chuck
Whedon> Dollhouse

Somehow I don’t think a turn in the ‘verse will be the same without them.

It’s true; as much as I loved Firefly, I don’t know that I’d like to see it come back. I’d be content to have a show with half its spirit and characters, though….

Don’t forget: River> Also coming to Dollhouse

Yea it would break my heart to see a relaunched Firefly without the original cast (minus Book and Wash of course)

Honestly, I just like the feel of Firefly so much. That is what I want. The cast chemistry was evident, the wit was perfect, and snappy dialogue. That is all I ask for.
