Top Superheroes?

British mag SFX recently released the results of a reader poll that named the top 50 greatest superheroes. Now this is always a good exercise in recognizing difference in cultures.
Lets start with who inhabits their top 10: (after the jump, just click)
- Batman
- Spider-man
- Superman
- Wolverine
- Iron Man
- Green Lantern
- Captain Britain
- Deadpool
- Daredevil
- Hulk
Now you tell me who the head scratchers are in that list. Pretty easy call isn’t it? What the heck are Captain Britain and Deadpool doing up there?
All I know is that if this poll was done anywhere else besides the UK, Captain Britain would not even be in the top 50. Deadpool, for as popular as he is, has no place being called a superhero.
There is a reason the other eight on that list have their own movie. Well technically seven, Green Lantern will be popping up in the next year or two.
Outside of that, the top three would be common to any list, though the order may change here and there. And Wolverine, yet another product of popular culture and fan love.
If the world would have come to me and asked “Who are the top five superheroes?” here is what I would say.

5. Superman

4. Batman

3. Spider-man

2. Doctor Strange

1. Thor
This is a blank line.
Because honestly, when all is said and done, who wouldn’t want a god on their side of the battle? Its a good thing he plays for the good guys.
And here are are couple of other oddities for me with this list:
- The top ranked female superhero sits at 13. Surely at least one should appear in the top 10. But then again, you have to think about the audience of the poll.
- Captain America is sitting at number 33. Perhaps he needs to switch spots with Captain Britain.
- I am not sure if V belongs on this list.
- Only one of the Fantastic Four appear on the list while most X-men are present. Maybe we should blame lackluster motion pictures.
