I know I’ve written more than a few posts on Mass Effect. But, in my defense, it was the best game I’ve played in more than a decade. There was more emotion than Fallout 3, offered more player choice than any of the Half-Life series, and much less linear than Doom 3.
The folks at Bioware have managed to scratch my sci-fi itch in a way I haven’t felt since I played “Sentinel Worlds” back in the mid ’80s. To my gameplay tastes, it was as close to perfection as I’ve ever played.
And it’s now less than a month until the sequel ships.

Christmas has come and sort of gone, and I stand here looking at my spoils. And all I can really think of right now is that I make it much too easy to shop for me.
Really, if it screams geek (or the sports teams I like) you know I will like it no matter what. And I will embrace it. I will wear it and smile at the confusing looks on the faces of those around me.
So its about the point where you are asking yourself what’s all the nonsense about a penis? I know, I know. But patience.
So I just wanted to share with you the highlights.

My fabulous sisters have out done themselves again when it comes to Christmas time/Nerdy Present time. What to give the offspring that has everything? Why, business cards of course – superhero business cards, and badges, and the bane of every superhero – paperwork.
The best part of the evening was when my youngest nephew – who’s name starts with an “S” protested that his name was spelled wrong on his manila envelope, an envelope that read “Top Secret.” Ah, to laugh at youth.
My sister Apryl has templates of all the paperwork for the Superhero Kit on her blog. It’s a good read (my favorite line item - “communications with sea ..read more

It’s been a great decade for movies. After a comparatively sleepy ’90s, the ’00s roared back with big budget movies that harkened to mind the great big-screen showcases of the late 70s and 80s. Below you’ll find the films that the world spent their hard earned cash on — some of them are cringeworthy, but many were both decent movies and huge moneymakers, which gives us at least a glimmer of hope for our species.

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about the scarcity of serious movies based on video games. Not serious in a drama vs. comedy sort of way, but a movie made to be a great movie, not to appease gamer fan boys. So I looked up the Wiki page on movies culled from video games and… there are zero real efforts to make a bonafide piece of film from a game. I don’t get why this is. Considering how just about every good movie these days is based on a book, why can’t there be good movies based on games? There are certainly enough games ..read more

I hope you had a fantastic Christmas. My technosilence was mostly brought on by the arrival of my parents from the Midwest. The holidays were largely spent under the warm comfort of scotch and no fewer than a dozen varieties of holiday treats.
But I’m back, and snuggling in to the equally protective womb of technology that usually envelops me. Despite being fairly distanced from computers for the week, I had plenty of geeky moments to share with you. Five of them:
Kept defending the words “nerd” and “geek” to my parents.I didn’t realize how often I use those words as a self-effacing compliment. But every time I mentioned something about “a ..read more
