Help the Hodges Auction

Tim Hodge is a well known animator who worked on such projects as Aladdin, Lion King, and Veggie Tales.  His son, Matthew was recently in an accident and is comatose.  The insurance won’t cover the costs so the National Cartoonist Society Foundation stepped in and started an ebay auction to help the family out.  Animators from all over the industry have donated rare originals, signed books and prints.  It’s a pretty impressive collection, I like the art from “How to Train Your Dragon” the best.  You can get more information ..read more

Angus MacLane’s Cube Dudes

I honestly can’t remember if I already wrote a post about this or not when I discovered it a few months back. I’m too lazy to look it up. For those that don’t know who Angus MacLane is, he’s been working at Pixar as an animator and storyboard artist on just about every Pixar movie since “A Bug’s Life.” He also got to direct the hilarious short “Burn-E” that appears on the “Wall-E” DVD. Also, he’s a Lego maniac. For the past several months, he’s been creating what he calls “Cube Dudes” in his spare time. They’re popular culture characters and people minimized using small lego bricks without being super ..read more

Mass Effect 2 lets your hero be anybody

Remember when I said a Mass Effect movie that recreated the events of the games was a horrible idea? Here’s why:

The game lets you customize Shepard, the game’s protagonist, to an intense degree. You can be a man or woman, and pick your skin tone, ear size, eyebrow spacing and more. And folks get pretty serious about it.

Kotaku has a killer thread going, where they ask readers to “show us your Shepard.” You should really go check it out and marvel at the diversity players have created.

Animated GIF museum: The Mail-Spitting Skull

Josh
Thursday

Animated GIFs are a dying breed. Forged in the early days of the World Wide Web, GIFs were used to add non-static content to sites long before Flash, CSS and Javascript came to the fore.

Nearly 20 years after the format was created, animated GIFs serve a purpose. They’re like a time capsule, and harken back to a simpler time, when we marveled at the potential of the Internet before it was completely overtaken by phishing and porn.

To that end, Geek6 is endeavoring to preserve and pay tribute to this dying format in our Animated GIF Museum. Every week, Joe and I will showcase an example of the finest art created ..read more

Baseball games are always tough to get right.  The only serious game that’s worth its salt is EA’s MVP 2005.  So it makes sense that the next progression in the genre is to bribe players to play, with the allure of becoming a millionaire.  When MLB 2K10 debuts in March, the first player to pitch a perfect game against the computer on All-Star mode will win a million bucks.

The set up is a little fishy, since you have to physically record it and send it in, but it should spur sales a little bit in what is probably the least popular category of sports game.

I also think the ..read more

The really big point that iPad haters are missing

Thursday
10:32 am

As we — and the rest of humanity — noted yesterday, Apple launched a new device called the iPad.

The device is essentially a super-sized iPod Touch, and was the culmination of more than a decade of rumors.

The tech geek world promptly started peeing all over it — and not in a positive, possessive or fetishistic way — the pee was filled with hate and derision.

“Where is the multitasking environment?” they shrieked. “It’s a closed-ended architecture — it’s not even a real computer!” they cried.

Listen up, geeks and haters, because I’m only going to say this once — take it to heart:

The iPad was not made for you.

Don’t take ..read more

The Geek6 mini-review of Mass Effect 2

Josh
Thursday
1:19 am

I’ve now had time to log a healthy (or unhealthy, if you prefer) amount of time with Mass Effect 2. Enough time where I feel I can at least give you a taste of what to expect.

Are you ready for my one-word review? Polished.

Want the full-paragraph version? Mass Effect 2 is the finest example of interactive entertainment the medium has produced to date. It transcends “really good game” territory. It nears perfection — or as close as we can come to it with today’s technology.

Allow me to back up my assertion with a few thoughts:

VISUALS: Mass Effect 2 shines across the board in terms of graphics. I’m playing ..read more

Hello iPad

Jason

Steve Jobs wowed the crowd and underwhelmed the general geekery today with the unveiling of Apple’s newest gadget de jour. Within minutes of the announcement of the name…iPad…the world o’ Twitter let out a collective meh and quickly degenerated into a bunch of jokes pertaining to feminine hygiene.

Personally I wasn’t all that impressed. Looking at it, it is a jumbo sized iTouch for the most part with the capability of connecting to AT&T’s 3G network. But it did have some wow factor to it, enough so to make me actually want to plunk down at least $500 bucks for one.

General thoughts?

  • Outside of the jumbo iTouch solution, I really found myself ..read more
  • New iWeapons Guns Pro App

Keeping with the App theme, my brother’s latest iPhone app was just released on iTunes.  It’s called iWeapons Guns Pro  and is pretty kickin’.  It’s got four different weapons to choose from, including a flame thrower, which makes me happy.

On an unrelated note I totally had a dream last week where a Terminator was after me but luckily I had a shotgun app on my phone; not an animated app but an actual shotgun.  Of course I kept on forgetting to check the safety (the vibrate/ring switch of course).

I’ve got three coupon codes if anyone wants to check it out.  Just leave a comment telling me which weapon would destroy terminators most efficiently ..read more
