Geek Six Book Club

A while ago I fiddled here with the idea of starting a ye olde booke clubbe here so we could have SOMEBODY to talk to after we read a fantasy novel just discovered by someone that the rest of the world read in 1996.

My plan is to just give people a heads up every time I start a new novel.  If it’s a book you’ve already read feel free to post your thoughts on the story.  If you’ve never read it before now is your chance to have some nerdole support (my newly minted nerdy morale support term).  Either way you win!  Or, I do, since I’m choosing the first one.  I’m open/requesting suggestions each time we finish a book/series though!  I’ve already convinced Christy to read this one with me, speaking of which it will be –

George R.R. Martin “A Game of Thrones” (which is the inspiration behind the soon be TV series on HBO with my favorite Sarah Connor – Lena Headey!)

I’m halfway in and really digging the world.  I love how twisted the political web is.  It’s almost like reading a modern political thriller, but there’s fighting with swords (w00t!)

Reader Comments

I love a good read count me in. I just put it on hold at the library.

I own most of the series, never cracked it. Let’s see if I can get through my other stuff first. IE finish Jordan’s The Gathering Storm. Finish rereading GRRM’s adventures of Dunk & Egg so I can read the new one in the upcoming Warriors collection (coming to a Geek6 review very soon). Supposedly I need to finish the Harry Potter series also, but I can sneak this in. Then I have to finish my Wheel of Time reread. Arrrgh.

I read voraciously. I’ve been finishing books right and left in two and three days for months. But “Game of Thrones”? It took me about five years to finish—-and I got my copy months before it was even released to the public.

I’m not saying it’s not a good book. It is–truly. And I’m looking forward to HBO’s telling of the story. But I swear I haven’t had so much trouble making it through something since LoTR.

As for the latest book… Released at Christmastime? That book is not out yet, is it? I don’t expect it for… oh… another 20 years….

Nah. “A Dance with Dragons” is still MIA.

Blarg. You wrote Game of Thrones. I read Sword of Truth. My brain. Blech. But I have read Game of Thrones. Great book. It very much surprised me that I liked it. Didn’t think I was. With the series as a whole I have read all but Feast for Crows. And that is because I was told not to and wait for Dance with Dragons.

Yes: wait. (And wait. And then wait some more….)

Truly, the book is a little disappointing without the other half.

I agree.

Feast For Crows wasn’t BAD. It was just lacking substance…

I read all sword of truth books in 6 months, it was a bit ridiculous, as there are 11 of them. To be sure it took me fifty pages to get into Game of Thrones, because there are a LOT of characters that they switch back and forth on, but once they went back to each character the second time I started to get that the random characters they were making reference too were each other and made things a lot easier.

Jason, once you’re caught up with your other reading we can do the Sword of Truth Series!

Oh, and Kate was right Dance with Dragons, it’s Christmas time, just Christmas time 2012 (according to Amazon).

Funny you mention the 50 pages. That’s why it took me so long to read that book. I kept getting about 40 pages in and then stopping. I liked it, but I wasn’t compelled to read it so much that other things didn’t distract me long term.

When I finally sat down and read the whole thing, I really got into it and thought it was great.

There’s finally a date for the next book? Fantastic!

I wouldn’t say that is a solid date though sadly. Amazon failed by allowing preorders on the book and has had to honor those preorders by keeping the book listed. They used to push it by 6-12 months each time they moved it. They probably said screw it and just put it at 3 years.

Yeah, I still think it will be 20 years between the last book and the new one.

W00t just finished Game of Thrones, and bought A Clash of Kings. Loved the ending of the first book. I’m more of a sit back and enjoy it rather than figure out where the plot is going kinda gal, even so, I marveled at how caught unawares I was at the ending; and yet it totally made sense. It wrapped up the events of the novel with a tantalizing promise of what it to come. Again, I say w00t! Leitha, my copy is going to Christy, but if the library takes too long let me know and I’ll mail it to you after Christy finishes.

I loved this series up to A Feast for Crows but couldn’t get into that one. If GRRM ever finally finishes A Dance with Dragons, I will have to give Crows another shot.

OMG 2012?! No wonder I still can’t find it anywhere. Everyone place I asked was all “oh it says christmas time” You’d think someone would ahve noticed the YEAR. Goes to show I should be unlazy and look stuff up myself.
