Hello iPad

Steve Jobs wowed the crowd and underwhelmed the general geekery today with the unveiling of Apple’s newest gadget de jour. Within minutes of the announcement of the name…iPad…the world o’ Twitter let out a collective meh and quickly degenerated into a bunch of jokes pertaining to feminine hygiene.

Personally I wasn’t all that impressed. Looking at it, it is a jumbo sized iTouch for the most part with the capability of connecting to AT&T’s 3G network. But it did have some wow factor to it, enough so to make me actually want to plunk down at least $500 bucks for one.

General thoughts?

  • Outside of the jumbo iTouch solution, I really found myself asking if I want this or many splurge a bit more for an actual laptop. Touch screen is nice and gadgety but is it really enough?
  • The one reason I would go after it is the iBooks function. I have held off from Amazon’s Kindle as I am the slowest reader ever. But iBooks captures my interest more than the Kindle interface. Plus I get to do my part in the death of print journalism.
  • The MLB demostration also peeked my interest. I am a sucker for sports.
  • It might actually prove to be a decent mobile video player all due to the larger screen size.
  • It is light at half a pound. Good for carrying. Bad for my clumsy ass.
  • Gaming seems to have been a big focus of the apps the iPad will be able to offer.
  • If I have to pay for 3g for my iPhone. Should I have to for my iPad?
  • Will this kill the Kindle?
  • Will this twist the dagger more in the back of newspapers?
  • Am I going to have to sit next to everyone reading their iPad on the train?
  • I love iPad Thai!

So what were your reactions to the unveiling? First iPad available in 60 days. Josh needs to give one to everyone in the Geek6 offices. Product testing.

Reader Comments

I’m very much on the fence. I’m really excited about the e-reader capabilities of the iPad. I’ve been holding back from buying a Kindle (I tried one and thought, wow, this is ALL it does?) and tossed around the idea of buying an iTouch for the Kindle app instead.

But it’s looking like this iPad will not run flash, therefore, no Hulu. I spend a lot of the time beside my husband on the couch watching TV on my computer while he usurps the TV for gaming.

If I have to get out the laptop or netbook to run Hulu (or any other website that uses Flash in an integral way), do I really want to plunk down $500 for an oversize iTouch?

I’ll have to think about it…

I, too, am on the fence. I mean, I really want one. I have neither an iPhone/iPod Touch nor a Kindle, so it would be like getting all those in one gadget. But, I feel like I should just save a little more and just get a laptop instead. I think I will wait and see what actual users think first.

The advantage of Kindle and similar devices is the digital ink. It’s much easier on the eyes and more appropriate for reading books. This is just another bright computer screen in your face. It is not an e-book reader, no matter how hard Apple tries to push it as one (and no matter if the masses treat it as such).

Good: Rumor has it Marvel may be considering electronic versions of their comics.
