The sweet photography of Talke

Moving into a new house is a daunting task. Getting through unpacking the boxes, even bigger. But the biggest to date? What in tarnation do we to decorate the walls?

To be honest, in the rentals we had had before now, we really did not put a lot of thought into it. Every once in a while, a framed poster would make it up on the wall. Probably the fanciest we got was a photo collage of the missions in San Antonio. Those were some pretty cool pictures I would admit. Oh wait, we had a couple of pieces of art from Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.

So when we started looking at it, we said the posters and crappy frames had to go. We wanted to go up a level in decor. So we immediately bought something from IKEA. Who would have thunk that 10% of the world’s population has the except same canvas art? But yes, better than paper posters of Spider-man and dragons.

What really came out of us putting our heads together was that we wanted to bring a little piece of home back into our house. See, both my wife and I moved here from Austin, TX. We both graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. And we both love the people, vibe and culture of Austin as well. So we knew we wanted to have something in the house that would remind us classic Austin.

Texas Capital Building

If you don’t know Austin is called the Live Music Capital of the World. It is home to South by Southwest and the Austin City Limits Festival. Its food is amazing and its history event richer. Just like everywhere you have probably been, there are the iconic signs of past and present that signify ‘This is Austin.’ Emo’s, Broken Spoke, Flipnotics, Chuggin’ Monkey, Threadgills, Stubbs…the list is endless.

So it was decided, photos of Austin was a must. So it was off to the interwebs to look. And boy oh boy did I find something that is just riveting photography. So riveting, I had to share it with you.

What photography is that?  Well it would be the photography of Peter Talke who runs his own photo blog, Places2Explore. Peter has a wide assortment of shots around the city of Austin. While I must give him his due for having a great eye and capturing some of the essential Austin shots, it was his infrared photography that jumped out and grabbed me.

So I wanted to share a couple of my favorite of his shots with you. And if you like what you see, you should definitely check out his other work at his blog.

Cool! I actually did the same thing for my parents. My dad loves the mountains of Utah but hasn’t lived here in ages. In 2008 I gave him a bunch of framed black-and-whites of incredible vistas photographed by a local photographer. Every time I see them I want them for my own walls.

Those IRs are awesome! (Not to be confused with the IRS, which is not so awesome….)

I’ll have to look up and post the website of the photographer who shot the photos I gave my dad. He is really incredibly good as well.

He has a gallery here, and I keep telling myself I’m going to buy art from there for my home.

Maybe not hip enough, but you may want to check out repro prints from Robert Wood’s Hill Country series (just google it). Great landscapes usually filled with bluebonnets. My in-laws have an original (and they’re from Nebraska) and it’s spectacular.
