Sucker for sports flicks

Forever StrongMaybe its just the culture I was raised in that led me to this point. You know the watched too much television and played too many sports culture. Which point is that you ask? The point that for some reason I cannot tear myself away from movies based on sports.

Sure if the movie is just stick out loud horrible I might only watch it once, but I will watch it. So yes I will watch The Legend of Bagger Vance without a thought in the world. Heck Tin Cup ranks up there as one of my favorite movies. And for some reason, any movie Disney has made that is related to the world of sports? Must watch it.

So tonight I went to Netflix to find some entertainment to unwind. Hit the instant watching area and bam! Forever Strong. And from there I found yet another reason that I am simply a straight up sucker for sport movies.

Forever Strong is about a troubled teen rugby star who happens to take life a little too carelessly. To the point he decided to drink and drive and crash into a cow pasture, throwing his girlfriend from his convertable. As a punishment he is sent to a detention center in good ole Salt Lake City. From there, he joins up with the local high school rugby team which is on a collision course with his old team which is coached by none other than his father.

I have to say that the movie having its setting in Salt Lake City automatically helps itself out. I mean I have been here four years now and I am still looking for something to connect me more into the city. Sports will do it. But the life lessons and the relationships built and lost in the movie are actually quite strong. Strong enough in fact that I might have teared up at a very sad point in the movie. I won’t do that for love dovey dramas, but sports I feel a kinship with.

the guys

These guys man….these guys.

Now all that emotional stuff may just be a result of reminiscing of the good old days when the neighborhood would converge on the basketball court for an entire summer. And my friends and I would systematically dismantle team after team to claim the King of the Court title most days. Those friends would go on to become my best men at my wedding. Friends I still am close with to this day even though we live all over the country (SLC, Austin, Alabama, Florida). But it made me miss my camaraderie with them. Made me want to pile onto a court right now or at the very least pile around a table for some grub.

But that aside, the acting isn’t the best in the world, but the story still sticks and is poignant. Local celebs dot the movie here and there, but probably no one outside of The SLC would recognize. Supposedly there are a bunch of known rugby players in there as well, but I wouldn’t have a clue. And for the emotional response it got from me, it gets a thumbs up.

And since I started with the world of sports movies, you get a mini-Pick6 of my top sports movies to end my ramblings.

6) The Natural

This is the first sports movie I can recall ever watching.

5) Glory Road

May not be the strongest movie out there, but its basketball and why its on the list.

4) Remember the Titans

I blame Remember the Titans for making want to see any of those Disney sport movies.

3) Tin Cup

I strive to live like Roy McAvoy. Damn you Don Johnson for not making it perfect.

2) Mystery, Alaska

I would never have thought a hockey movie would be near the top of my list. Have to admit Miracle wasn’t far behind either.

1) White Men Can’t Jump

Ahh the movie to which I live the early 1990s to. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes validated the decade for me.

My brother LOVES Forever Strong. I think it’s a weird combo of the Utah connection, and that he loves rugby because of the two years he spent in New Zealand, and yada yada. I haven’t seen it, but even being a non-sports fanatic…I admit…I love the uplifting sports flick. But I have to add my favorite – The Rookie. Why is it that I will always have a crush on Dennis Quaid?

Hmmm…. Sports movies.

I didn’t know who won the Super Bowl, or even who was playing in it, until this morning. I’m not big on team sports, though I like to watch individual athletes compete in the Olympics. I have enjoyed maybe a handful of sports movies.

These would be:

The Natural
Tin Cup

Um, um…. I’m seriously wracking my brain here….

I think that may be it.

I’ve seen all of the movies you listed, but I only really cared for the two I noted above. “The Natural” was one of my favorite movies growing up, and “Tin Cup” always makes me laugh.

I suppose I could add “Happy Gilmore” to the list. I’m not much of an Adam Sandler fan, but that movie is one that I occasionally enjoy.

And, well, what about Costner’s “Field of Dreams? Does that qualify as a sports movie?

Duh!!!!!

“Hoosiers.”

Man, you didn’t list “Hoosiers”?

For shame.

I can hear the music from “Hoosiers” playing in my head as I type, and it’s getting my blood going as always. I wish I could find that music….

“Brian’s Song” is another on that comes to mind.

I was also a big fan of “Heaven Can Wait” as a kid. Again, I don’t know how much one can call taht a sports movie, but still….

I like “Wildcats” as a kid, too. Yes, really: Goldie Hawn was big then. It was a different time.

And now I’m done, because I can’t keep posting one-liners, and I’m typing poorly.

Would the Rocky series count as a sports film? I mean it’s just about one guy instead of a team sport, but it is a pretty inspirational series.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Rocky movies, all but “V.” I have them memorized and all the music is on my iPod.

Without a doubt, the winner for me of best sports movie ever is the entire Rocky franchise. I’ll even throw in the fifth one, though I never watch it, because the other five are classics.

Seriously, Jason, you only have one movie in this entire list that was made before 1990. *tsk, tsk* I guess I can see where the Rocky movies might not have the same impact on someone who didn’t watch them as they came out, but “Rocky” won the Oscar for Best Picture; “Hoosiers” put basketball movies on the map; etc.

Well Rocky V was a POS. I was shocked Balboa was as good as it was. It was a nice throwback to the first one. One thing odd about the original: That whole creepy sequence where Rocky tries to get Adrian to stay over. Raaaapissst.

getting strooonng noooowww…

Where he’s holding the door closed? Yeah…. I watched this again just recently and tried to reconcile myself to it. I mean, on the one hand I get that she’s skittish and he wants her to give him a chance. If he lets her go, he’s afraid she’ll keep eluding him and he’ll never find a way through her defenses. But, on the other hand, yeah: it’s creepy.

Written By Amber on February 9th, 2010 @ 12:36 pm

Yeah, Adrian squirming around and yelling “No, Rocky! Stop! Let me go!” didn’t help either. I mean I understand she’s skittish and every other guy that might have tried to get with her probably tried to take advantage of her but if I tried that, I’d probably end up with police called to my place.

I like sports movies even though I don’t like most sports. I loved Field of Dreams even though watching an actual baseball game is mind-numbingly boring to me. I liked Bagger Vance. Happy Gilmore if that counts. Slap Shot…even though hockey is only slightly less dull than baseball. Football movies even though I’d almost rather undergo some good old rectal surgery than see a Superbowl. Bend It Like Beckham was great, and is the sole reason I know who David Beckham is. ;-)

“2) Mystery, Alaska I would never have thought a hockey movie would be near the top of my list. Have to admit Miracle wasn’t far behind either.”

If golf movies can make the list…

I have to say, though, U.S. citizenship is probably required to care much about Miracle.

Eh. I’m a U.S. citizen and “Miracle” means nothing to me. I can’t think of a Disney sports movie I’ve ever cared about. But, then, I can say that about Disney movies, period.

I’m not really a fan of “Mystery, Alaska,” either.

These aren’t bad movies, by any means. I honestly don’t know what it is about these and other hockey movies, unless it’s perhaps that they don’t get enough into the story of the people themselves for me to care. I think that’s why I prefer sports movies about individuals. There is more time to focus on that person and really get to know them.

Written By Amber on February 16th, 2010 @ 1:18 pm

But, that said, “Hoosiers” is a really good movie. And I think that is largely because it spends more time on the individual human drama than other team ports movies.

No Disney movies period?! But I liked Tron…and all the Pixar movies.

I’m just not into animation, I’m afraid. It’s the rare cartoon I’ll go to see at the theater, and that is usually under duress.

I love animation, although I’m not too crazy about most Disney stuff, even the classics. I guess Pixar is owned by Disney, and I’ve liked everything they’ve done.

Dare I say “A Knight’s Tale?” Jousting ftw!

“A Knight’s Tale.” Hee! Why not? That movie is fun.

Jason, I never could get into “Tron.” I suppose I need to give it another shot now that there’s a sequel in the works. But I see the word “Disney” come across the screen and I break out in hives.

I saw “Ratatouille” recently and thought, “Really? This movie was nominated for Best Picture? WHY?!?” The best part about the whole movie, in my estimation, was the food critic’s article at the end. The rest was torture.

#29
Written By Amber on February 17th, 2010 @ 5:51 pm

Oh, wait. It wasn’t actually nominated, I guess. I remember there being talk of it and thought somehow that it had happened.

Don’t even get me started on “Happy Feet.” I didn’t make it through that one. *shudders* I think that was the last such movie I tried to watch prior to “Ratatouille.” Animation and I do not mix.

Written By Amber on February 17th, 2010 @ 5:54 pm

Well Ratatouille WAS a little meh. I liked Wall-E. The first however minutes on Earth were the best part. Up was good too.

The new Tron looks really good and it’s odd they’re actually using a lot of physical sets considering its heritage. Better than a Lucasarts CG fest though.

It’s funny how stupid people will write something about how they disliked a movie, but won’t bother to tell us why. They probably don’t know why.

Over the past week I have watched the following:

The Rookie
The Mighty Ducks
Rookie of the Year
Cool Runnings

Just saying. Sucker I am.

Ratatouille was okay. Wall-E I only like the first half of. Same with Up. I am looking forward to Toy Story 3.
