A Geek Girl’s St. Patrick’s Day

Well friends, St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching. This is the one holiday where my family does not hide candy throughout the house and have the small children collect it. Here’s how I celebrate.
1. Darby O’Gill and the Little People: I’ve watched this movie every year of my life. Growing up we weren’t allowed to watch it any other time, but St Patrick’s Day. Please note that you must do the leprechaun dance for the Fox Hunt song.
2. All Food Must Be Green or Irish: Corned beef and cabbage, green eggs and ham, Irish soda bread, Lucky Charms, green grilled cheese sandwiches, green oatmeal, green milk, green pancakes, green sugar cookies….you get the picture. Really, there isn’t anything you can’t turn green, including butter.
3. Green Clothes: When I was a child you had to prep the night before and make sure you were wearing green to bed, otherwise you were woken up with pinches for not wearing any green. I haven’t informed my roommate of this yet, and I don’t think I will.
How do you geek out over St. Patrick’s Day?

I’m with you on all but the movie, though I have been known to use the “My eyes are green” excuse in place of green clothing.
This year I’ll be rockin’ a designer dress with a shamrock pattern. No green for me, but still in the spirit.
Oh, and I WANT THOSE CUPCAKES.
NOW!!!!
Green beer is as far as I go. Those cupcakes actually look kind of nasty to me…
They look incredibly nasty. But they are cupcakes, so it’s all good.
My best friend and I scoured Chicago one St. Patrick’s Day looking for green beer. 6 bars later, we finally found some, most were already out. But neither of us drink, so it was kind of anti-climatic and everyone around us was confused because we just ordered it and didn’t drink it.
Here’s the link to the recipe for those Lucky Green Velvet Baby Cakes.

For me the debate is whether to try to pull off a kilt on St. Patrick’s or not. Considering it’s a work day… Not sure. Of course green clothes, though. I mean–we’re not savages, here.
Having spent the week before drumming up excitement for pi day, I usually like to see the confusion of my coworkers as I try to explain to them that I only celebrate recently made up holidays. I used to say made up holidays but they would counter with all holidays are made up. Bah!
In that case let me be the first to wish you in advance: Happy Love Day!
You forgot the ever clever green underwear to bed. When you got pinched in the morning for lack of green clothing the joke was always on the pincher because you were afforded 10 pinchings of them!
The green milk was always the most difficult for me to stomach. I still think that it is warmer than non-green milk.
You are can certainly wear a kilt on St Paddy’s. It’s most appreciated when accompanied by a shirt stating, “Kilted for her pleasure”!
Totally rocking the Kilt at work on St. Patties. I even have one in the Irish National Tartan just for the occasion! I don’t do the green beer. I’ll take my Guinness untampered with thank you very much.
I’m not a fan of beer, but I’ve been wondering what green food dye would do to my white wine….
“They look incredibly nasty. But they are cupcakes, so it’s all good.”
I suppose. I’m sure they taste good. They just look like someone sneezed.
“I’m not a fan of beer”
That boggles the mind.
The first comment I heard when I walked in the office today was, “Wow! I guess there’s no chance of anyone pinching YOU today.” I think that says it all about my wardrobe for the day. I am green literally from head to toe, wearing emerald earrings and green heels as well as a green tee, green bolero jacket, and emerald rings and bracelet.
In honor of the day, I will also be breaking out my green spandex at the gym.
OK, so it’s more like cotton lycra, thankfully. But, as a child of the 80s, it’s all spandex to me.
Yay Amber! I get you on the spandex. As a child that lived in a gymnastics gym most of the time I had quite a collection of spandex and can’t seem to completely let go.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Friends!
