As if the news from Chile wasn’t a big enough bummer, now it comes out that the earthquake was rude enough to rob us of over 30 hard earned seconds a year! (The Earthquake’s legal counsel just called to alert me that I’m an idiot at math.  The actual number is under a second per year.  Still, I could use that time to start generating a burp) As NASA calculated, the quake shook the Earth’s axis a tad, to the tune of 1.26

microsecond-shorter days.  The interesting part of that article is how human activity can shift the axis.  Opens up a whole new avenue for “When your mom takes a bath…” jokes.

Well, actually it’s more like less than half a millisecond a year. But what’s a few orders of magnitude between friends?
