Tired of moving the same stack of unopened cardboard boxes around the country, I finally decided to crack open my decades of memories and consolidate them into more durable plastic tubs. This poorly-planned endeavor had me digging through piles of Boy Scout stuff (yeah, I made it all the way), newspaper clippings from mom, plaques, doodles, artwork and self-drawn comics — it was a treasure trove of my secret nerd childhood.
But what really made my day was cracking open a box of comic books I hadn’t opened since 1989. The piles of Junior Woodchucks, Porky Pigs and Bugs Bunnies were cute, the small collection of gothic horror comics held up ..read more

Every few years, some college friends and I gather somewhere in the country to reminisce and nerd it up with the kind of focused intensity not seen since we lined up for Episode 1.
After we booked our condo in Vegas, we noticed that one of the biggest “Star Trek” conventions was being held a few miles from our place — and while none of us are die-hard “Star Trek” fans, we’d be doing a disservice to our geek roots to not attend.
We didn’t stay long — Vegas in its twinkling, glittering glory was calling, and we had limited time together. But a few impressions and photos from our time at ..read more
With space based sci-fi shows all but dead, and the science fiction genre itself hurting, our mood has been melancholy at best.
But there’s hope in the form of new shows coming down SyFy’s pike. It’s no secret that SyFy has been hunting for a new space opera since “Galactica” was on the wane — but it looks like we’re getting double for our patience. Both seem to crib liberally from “Firefly,” our favorite success story, but it’s yet to be seen whether the shows will capture the same magic.

The Conundrum: I had to visit family in Nebraska during San Diego Comic Con 2010.
The Solution: Using a patent-pending technology involving space-age polymers, I produced several clones of myself. These clones, virtually indistinguishable from the real me, descended upon Comic-Con. Their mission: Collect data. Collect Schwag. Analyze. Report.
Here are the images they returned:
I arrived at Comic-Con, fresh, full of excitement and ready to begin the weekend.
Ah, the floor of Comic-Con. So many comics to browse. Where should I start?
How about Larry Nemecek’s Next Generation companion?
Here I am, taking a moment to freshen up in the mirror. Yep, everything seems in place, although ..read more

Good news! I’ve figured out a way to get over my despondency over missing out on yet another San Diego Comic-Con: Take me with you.
Despite my repeated carlisthenics (my patented exercise regimen), I’m still unable to contort into your carry-on. But don’t despair, my would-be roomie — I’ve discovered a way we can still see the unique sights and unforgettable smells of thousands of geeks packed into tight spaces in the baking San Diego sun.
I’ve assembled your very own Josh kit!
Print out your Geek6 Josh Facsimile (he likes card stock), mount it on a popsicle stick or ruler, and you’re set to go! Too lazy to print it ..read more

Ever since we were glued to episodes of Beyond 2000 as kids, we’ve never gotten over our heartbreak at being promised a flying car in the 21st century. We’ve brought up Parajet in the past, but there are several other companies rushing to get their designs aloft, too.
The Terrafugia Transition:
The Transition is basically a street-legal sport aircraft, and is one of the closest flying cars to actually winding up in your garage. The wings accordion up to vertical positions so the vehicle can drive on roads.
Cool factor: Call it Jetson’s law — the closer flying cars get to reality, the more homely they become. The Transition resembles a ..read more

Eddie McClintock is the star of SyFy’s guerrilla hit “Warehouse 13.” He’s also a great visual artist and quite possibly one of the most down-to-earth guys that I’ve met — celebrity or not. I spent some time talking with Eddie on Thursday to advance the show’s second season (which begins July 6 on SyFy).
The background:
It began with an insult.
On June 7, I watched the pilot episode of Warehouse 13, and fired off a hasty verdict via Twitter. “Warehouse 13 seems fun, even if Eddie McClintock seems like a poor man’s Ben Browder.”
It was a brief blip in the sea of babbling, opinions and accusations that is Twitter. But Eddie McClintock caught ..read more

In case you weren’t aware of my absence, I’ve been busy developing my day-job super-secret project to full fruition. During that time, I’ve been knee-deep in code and answering the sort of hate mail that would darken your soul to know of its very existence.
After 10 non-stop days and nights of toil, I emerged from my nuclear fallout shelter made of Clif bar wrappers and cans of Diet Mountain Dew to find the world a drastically changed place.
So, dear readers in this most hostile of foreign landscapes, if you’re like me, and have been away for a spell, here’s some of what’s changed over the past two weeks:
Nintendo made a

My son is 3 and a half. He’s been reading for a year (his favorite parlor trick is reading nametags at stores and name-dropping them to the employees). He’s got an eerie near-photographic memory.
And he still poops himself. It’s not that he can’t use a toilet — it’s just that he sees no logical reason to.
But I digress. At any rate, we find ourselves in the diaper aisle on a fairly routine basis. My wife spotted these Huggies Little Movers denim-style diapers (no, she didn’t buy them).
Have these people never seen “Arrested Development?” Perhaps they have, and it’s a plot designed to raise a ..read more

The first trailer for “Battlestar Galactica Online” hit E3 today, and with it came some cinematic footage that captures Zoic Studios’ shaky cam footage and space combat perfectly. It’s exciting, frankly, and any dose of Battlestar Galactica is welcome.
But, in the end, we were curious — the show wasn’t really about thrilling space combat and high doses of strategy. After the conclusion of the second season, it took a turn for the high-minded, and spiraled off in pursuit of legalese, shifting characters, and a significant amount of retconning deus ex machina.
No gameplay footage has been revealed, but we couldn’t help but wonder how the game would handle. We’ve ..read more
