Scifinal – The Best Place to Get Your Fix of Nerdy Webisodes

Autumn

So I’m a fan of The Guild, I enjoy The Legend of Neil (when I’m not mildly appalled), and man those New Caprica BSG webisodes made me happy; but that being said, I really have a hard time getting motivated to go hunting for new content.  But then a little bird (read – Twitter) told me about Scifinal.  It’s a web directory of all the independently made science fiction webseries.

Sure, there’s a fair heaping of apartment roommate genre spins, but I kinda love those — especially ones like My Roommate the Cylon.

Or, if you prefer flatmates and zombies, there is Zomblogalypse, which made me giggle Shaun ..read more

Your very own GeekSix iPhone wallpaper!

I went down to the cellar of the Geek6 headquarters over the weekend — I needed to find some tax records that claimed we were, in fact, an offshore business impervious to federal tax laws. Never you mind why.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered not only the falsified incorporation papers, but an entire art department!

“Holy crap!” I exclaimed, tiptoeing around a giant stack of empty Hot Pockets boxes.

“Don’t move those, boss,” piped up a meek and pale artist. “We save them to burn as fuel during the long, cold winter months.”

“Yes, yes,” I muttered, tipping the boxes in the vague direction of what I assumed to be a trash can. ..read more

Tauntaun Skin Rug

So one time I was in a fabric store and noticed some great faux fur that reminded me of of Tauntaun fur.  Immediately I texted my buddy Malaki (check out his awesome Iron Man costume!) and was like “could you make me a Tauntaun head outta foam so I can have a Tauntaun skin rug?”

He laughed for about five minutes then said “Of course!”  He presented it to me at my wedding.  It’s Hothian tradition, after all.

Help the Hodges Auction

Tim Hodge is a well known animator who worked on such projects as Aladdin, Lion King, and Veggie Tales.  His son, Matthew was recently in an accident and is comatose.  The insurance won’t cover the costs so the National Cartoonist Society Foundation stepped in and started an ebay auction to help the family out.  Animators from all over the industry have donated rare originals, signed books and prints.  It’s a pretty impressive collection, I like the art from “How to Train Your Dragon” the best.  You can get more information ..read more

Animated GIF museum: The Mail-Spitting Skull

Animated GIFs are a dying breed. Forged in the early days of the World Wide Web, GIFs were used to add non-static content to sites long before Flash, CSS and Javascript came to the fore.

Nearly 20 years after the format was created, animated GIFs serve a purpose. They’re like a time capsule, and harken back to a simpler time, when we marveled at the potential of the Internet before it was completely overtaken by phishing and porn.

To that end, Geek6 is endeavoring to preserve and pay tribute to this dying format in our Animated GIF Museum. Every week, Joe and I will showcase an example of the finest art created ..read more

The sweet photography of Talke

Moving into a new house is a daunting task. Getting through unpacking the boxes, even bigger. But the biggest to date? What in tarnation do we to decorate the walls?

To be honest, in the rentals we had had before now, we really did not put a lot of thought into it. Every once in a while, a framed poster would make it up on the wall. Probably the fanciest we got was a photo collage of the missions in San Antonio. Those were some pretty cool pictures I would admit. Oh wait, we had a couple of pieces of art from Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.

So when we started looking at ..read more

Legend of the Cake Toppers

Autumn

My awesome friend Cori made our wedding cake for us.

After much debating (we decided that Caprica Six and Helo would make to bizarre of a couple, for one) we settled on having Richard and Kahlan from Legend of the Seeker to be our cake topper.  But there are no LOTS action figures to be found!  What’s a girl to do?  Why, have the same magic friend make some custom fondant figures!  And so she did!

Details are as follows: the sword that Drew is holding is painted with real edible silver, edible 14K Gold, and is adorned with a real Swarovski crystal.  Ever the attention to detail Cori  also made the ..read more

Last fall a music video came out called “A Glorious Dawn.”  John Boswell recorded it using an autotune program that allowed him to take footage and audio clips of scientists and tune their words into music.  They make me really happy.  A new one came out today about biology, you can check them out on youtube, buy them on itunes, and go to the Symphony of Science site to contribute if you’ve got ideas.
