When sports guys have a novel idea

For some reason, athletes — and voters — think that by being good on the field means you are good in Congress or the governor’s mansion.  This self-sense of mobility has also quietly carried over to the world of fiction.  Here are a few fun (or NOT fun) page turners from jocks whose only qualification for getting published is being able to run faster than you.

Monday Night Jihad

By Jason Elam

The ex-Broncos all-pro kicker penned a series based on an ex-pro football player protagonist named Riley Covington.  The

premise is sort of the Pat Tillman Story on steroids, with a chaste christian player deciding to go into the army after terrorists ..read more

Game of Thrones Teaser Trailer

Autumn
Thursday
7:15 pm

HBO first aired a very brief, atmospheric teaser featuring Sean Bean during the True Blood premiere, but you can check it out, as well as a few introductory features of the show, here.

I’m a little nervous it’s only going be be ten episodes (what’s been ordered thus far).  I know HBO kinda makes their own season sizes, but if I only get ten episodes and it cancels or some such.  Well, I’ll be sad.

There’s also this fan made video that streams pictures from all the main cast members (stock pictures of actors in other roles, or their 8×10’s, ect, not from Game of Thrones) to get your imagination ..read more

6 Sword of Truth Storylines I Still Wanna See

Autumn
Thursday
10:42 pm

Note, this post is for people who have both read The Sword of Truth Series and seen The Legend of the Seeker, spoiler wary beware!

So, we just finished the last episode of Legend of the Seeker.  The entire episode was a curtain call to nearly all the characters they’ve brought from the books, which led me to think about how many story lines and characters we’ll never get to see. A sampling -

The Boy Army – Kahlan lead a bunch of green soldier boys to defeat a horde of evil men known as the Imperial Order.  I’ve seldom gotten that excited while reading a novel.  I’ll always be a little wistful ..read more

Summer Reading for the Newly Initiated Part II

Autumn
Tuesday
8:32 pm

The focus of this part of the list is children and young adult novels that can still be read and enjoyed as an adult.  By no means is it complete, but it gives you a sampling of my favorites.  This list is for my buddy Ruth, because though she’s been a geek for many a year, she has yet to sample a lot of nerdy literature.  You should read her blog over here, she’s awesome.

Redwall – I’d say one of my biggest introductions to modern fantasy was not Lord of the Rings, or The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (I wasn’t a fan of the Hobbit and couldn’t ..read more

A Little Summer Reading for the Newly Initiated Part I

Autumn
Wednesday
7:05 pm

So my buddy Ruth is just beginning to dabble in science fiction literature, which makes me have nerdy squeals of joy, because reading geeky romps is one of my favorite things.  And of course, by geeky romps I mean literature.  Here’s a sampling, a mix of classics and new that are my favorites I pulled off my shelf.

The Hobbit – If you’re going to read it, read the annotated version by Douglas A. Anderson.  When I first read this when I was 12 I didn’t like it at all.  Bilbo was a pansy and I preferred my heroes to be, well, more heroic.  I read this version in my ..read more

Fine Valyrian Steel

Autumn
Wednesday
6:31 pm

So, it’s been a few months, I wanted to check in with everyone who wanted to talk about the first in George R.R. Martin’s series “The Song of Ice and Fire” namely “Game of Thrones”  so how is everyone doing?  Any progress?  I kinda hearted it a lot, so I read the entire series, but I don’t want to go too in depth just yet to give people a chance to catch up.  So instead, look what I discovered!

Valyrian Steel has officially licensed replicas from the series.  The part of me that gets giddy over a fine sword was particularly tickled by the fact that Martin sent the replica ..read more

Mispronouncing Names All Over the Geekworld

Christy
Tuesday
1:51 am

My six year old nephew Colin has been reading the Animorphs books by K. A. Applegate.  Here’s the best part, his Mom (my sister Chelisa) told me how he came up with his own pronunciation of the character’s names.  The best one being Tobias, which he pronounces Tow-bee-us.  He’ll correct you if you say it any other way.  It got me thinking about names that I’ve mispronounced throughout the years.

1.  Carlisle from the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.  Okay, so I wasn’t the one who mispronounced this one.  It was actually my sister Chelisa, but I can’t stop laughing about it.  She’s been reading Twilight to her 10 ..read more

Hogwarts Up in Flames!

Christy
Monday
1:53 pm

Yep, it’s true.  While filming the Hogwarts battle scene for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows some of the pyrotechnics went awry causing “a mocked-up castle made of timber, steel and plastic”  to go up in smoke.  6 fire engines, 40 minutes, and £100,000 later the fires were out and no one was hurt. Phew! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is set to be released in two installments, with part one in 3D on November 19th. ..read more

Part Animal, Part Plant

Friday
6:02 pm

I recently finished reading “Wings” by Aprilynne Pike.  Okay, I know it’s a teen fantasy novel with an ever present triangle of a not so normal girl, a normal boy, and a mythical male.  I don’t care.  I plan to never outgrow this fluffy genre.  If you hate spoilers and plan on reading this book then stop reading right ..read more

Finally finished The Gathering Storm

Jason
Thursday
9:16 pm

Remember way back in October when all your heard me speak about was the impending release Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s The Gathering Storm, book 12 of the Wheel of Time series?

Remember how I got to be a really cool Storm Leader at a signing shortly after its release? Even Tor Books was nice enough to get me a copy a week early so I could read it and let you know how it was?

Well two nights ago I finally finished it, a cool four and a half months after the fact. I know, I know. Fail.

Its that whole slow reading thing, along with a break I took ..read more
