“You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who's in ruttin' command here!”
Jayne Cobb, "Firefly"

I quite often defend my geek passion as the equivalent of sports fanatics. I like conventions, comics, movies and such for the same reasons people are fanatical about sports. Not only am I interested in the subject matter but I love the camaraderie of being surrounded by others that share my similar interests. This comparison was most clearly illustrated at DragonCon a few years back. There was a pivotal college football game scheduled in Atlanta the same weekend as DragonCon. While there was some hostility from the geeks when the football fans got a hold of the DragonCon hotel rates and booked out the rooms in record time, ..read more

Don’t panic! It’s just Preview Night that’s sold out. 4 Day memberships are still on sale, sans the Preview Night. However, if you plan on attending I would buy your 4 Day pass now. There was a mad email/IM/phone frenzy in my family this morning. Everyone slightly panicked except my brother who had mentioned that he heard a rumor that Preview Night would sell out soon. Ironically my brother very rarely makes it to San Diego in time for the ..read more

If I’ve learned one thing in my year of blogging here at GeekSix, it’s that geeks aren’t a one-size-fit-all collective. There are many specialized facets within geekdom that other card-carrying members don’t embrace, or even shun.
So I figure, in the interest of self-disclosure, and getting to know us all a little better, I’d come clean with geek stuff I should like, but just don’t. If this post makes you lose faith in me as your resident head geek, I apologize — I’m hoping we can find common ground. And, on that note, let the flameage begin with the geek topics I can’t stand:
Almost all anime. There are bits of ..read more

Check it out. As my sister Rachel put it, “DragonCon could do that in their sleep!”

So maybe I say things without fully realizing their implications. I’m a little on the naive side. I know, hard to believe but it’s true. There was that one time that taught me reign in my use of “Hey, I’m going to be in town this weekend. Want to play?” It gets even worse during DragonCon. Wait, hold up! That’s not true. It becomes more intentional during DragonCon. Rachel and I started writing down the best of the random and occasionally inappropriate comments from this weekend. So can you match the Geek Girl with the quote? All quotes are either me or Rachel.

1. Breasts that do NOT pass the pencil test exposed with only duct tape pasties.
2. Multiple Slave Leias grinding on each other.
3. JarJar Binks being punished by a dominatrix.
4. A not attractive, not very well costumed Comedian in a too small robe with exposed tighty whities and a not so funny erection.
5. Not seeing but hearing a man exit the elevator and vomiting back into it. And then later having the vomiting man’s friend come up and apologize. Funny cause I didn’t see them, just the vomit.
6. Voltaire!
7. Seeing a Dawn that did not feel it necessary to go ..read more

What’s the first thing a Geek Girl does at DragonCon? Buy a new corset from the guys at Marvelous Mayhem. It might be my new favorite article of clothing.
I went to one panel, BSG. (Alessandro Juliani, Michael Trucco, Kandyse McClure, Kate Vernon, Michael Hogan, Luciana Carro) My favorite moment from the panel was when someone asked Alessandro what Gaeta’s call sign would be? His response, ” Stumpy, Pegleg, or The Back Door’s Open.” ..read more

I asked myself that a gazillion times last night as I tackled the task. Now, I travel a lot for work and to visit my family. I’m a pro at packing. I don’t really like it, but I can usually throw everything I need for a week into a suitcase in about 30 minutes flat. Not true when packing for a convention. For some reason those 30 minutes drag into 3-4 hours. I just don’t want to forget anything. Plus, you need unique things when packing for a convention like DragonCon. So, here’s what I ended up with when I finished packing at 2:30 this morning in preparation for my ..read more
