GeekSix Guest Post – Brewing Leveling Guide

Autumn
Wednesday
6:30 pm

Editor’s note – This is a guest post written by my friend and twitter buddy Jim Brooks aka @nerdsherpa.  He followed me after @thinkgeekretweeted something I said and we’ve been BFF’s ever since.  He decided to write about a slightly different geekery than we usually talk about here, enjoy!

I recently sat down for lunch with my friend Erik (@topfermented) to talk about his Kickstarter project, Mystery Brewing Company. I mentioned how all of the friends I know who are into home brewing have a relatively high degree of geekitude in common. Obviously, there’s a lot of science and chemistry involved, so there’s that appeal to geeks. ..read more

I woke up yesterday morning determined to obtain Williams-Sonoma’s Star Wars Cookie Cutters.  (Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, Yoda, Boba Fett) I’d been thwarted last week as I drove to the store to find that it had already been closed for 23 minutes.  So sad!  But never fear, I arrived yesterday as they were opening their doors.  I am now the proud owner of more than just Star Wars Cookie ..read more

Geeks, pizza, and taste testing the new Domino’s

Josh
Sunday
3:42 pm

Let’s face it: us geeks consume a lot of pizza, most of it sub-par. So when Domino’s announced last month that they had completely redone their operation, it was my duty as a nerd to put that to the test. My arteries took a critical hit for your sins. But was it worth it?

Preordering

What we ordered: My wife and I got two medium pizzas at polar opposites. Mine was hand-tossed, with extra bacon, extra jalapeños and extra feta cheese. My wife’s had a light white sauce with mushrooms, onion, green pepper, fresh tomato and chicken.

How we ordered it: Dominos’ Web interface is quite nice. It handles coupons cleanly (unlike other ..read more

Random Acts of Geekiness: The Peep Experiments

Christy
Wednesday

After my brother-in-law Ric professed his love of Peeps over Facebook, “I like stale peeps, fresh peeps, and peeps with the plastic grass stuck to ‘em.  This might be the year to try the frozen peep since there is 4 inches of new snow outside” someone suggested that he check out this oh so geeky website on Peep Research.  You’ll be able to expand your knowledge of basic Peep Science and Peep Health.  Are Peeps water soluble?  How do they tolerate the effects of alcohol and smoking?  And even an answer to Ric’s question regarding reactions to cold.

If you’re not interested in the semi-ethical experiments on Peeps, ..read more

This is how 1/3 of GeekSix celebrated Pi Day.

By baking.  Yep, Autumn and I can bake.  I really do think this is Autumn’s favorite holiday and she was the mastermind behind all the celebrating.  Last year we hiked in the Poppy Reserve in Lancaster and then ate pie.  This year, we christened Autumn’s new kitchen and made use of all her matrimonially obtained kitchen gadgets.  “Hey Autumn, do you have a rolling pin?  No?  Okay, I’ll just use a glass.”  20 minutes of baking activities pass and Autumn opens a drawer.  “Oh, I do have a rolling ..read more

A Geek Girl’s St. Patrick’s Day

Christy
Friday
3:05 pm

Well friends, St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching. This is the one holiday where my family does not hide candy throughout the house and have the small children collect it. Here’s how I celebrate.

1. Darby O’Gill and the Little People: I’ve watched this movie every year of my life.  Growing up we weren’t allowed to watch it any other time, but St Patrick’s Day.  Please note that you must do the leprechaun dance for the Fox Hunt song.

2.  All Food Must Be Green or Irish: Corned beef and cabbage, green eggs and ham, Irish soda bread, Lucky Charms, green grilled cheese sandwiches, green oatmeal, ..read more

Legend of the Cake Toppers

Autumn
Tuesday
8:01 pm

My awesome friend Cori made our wedding cake for us.

After much debating (we decided that Caprica Six and Helo would make to bizarre of a couple, for one) we settled on having Richard and Kahlan from Legend of the Seeker to be our cake topper.  But there are no LOTS action figures to be found!  What’s a girl to do?  Why, have the same magic friend make some custom fondant figures!  And so she did!

Details are as follows: the sword that Drew is holding is painted with real edible silver, edible 14K Gold, and is adorned with a real Swarovski crystal.  Ever the attention to detail Cori  also made the ..read more

Peanut Butter Mixer

Christy
Tuesday
4:07 pm

Why didn’t I think of that?  I geek out over peanut butter all the time.  Peanut butter straight from the jar.  Peanut butter ice cream.  Peanut butter frozen yogurt.  Peanut butter and bananas.  Peanut butter on fudgsicles.  As I was making a peanut butter sandwich today my mind wandered back to my pre-school days when I carried my lunch in an Adam’s peanut butter bucket.  All the cool kids did, though I don’t remember how that started.  I thought I’d check to see if you can still purchase giant yellow buckets of peanut butter when I stumbled upon this gem of a product.  Natural Peanut Butter Mixer.  Adams peanut ..read more
