“At this point, we could go two ways. There is the easy way, and that is very easy. You'll never know about the hard way.”

The first trailer for “Battlestar Galactica Online” hit E3 today, and with it came some cinematic footage that captures Zoic Studios’ shaky cam footage and space combat perfectly. It’s exciting, frankly, and any dose of Battlestar Galactica is welcome.
But, in the end, we were curious — the show wasn’t really about thrilling space combat and high doses of strategy. After the conclusion of the second season, it took a turn for the high-minded, and spiraled off in pursuit of legalese, shifting characters, and a significant amount of retconning deus ex machina.
No gameplay footage has been revealed, but we couldn’t help but wonder how the game would handle. We’ve ..read more

We get it — you’re busy. Nobody has time to wade through piles of E3 coverage, but you don’t want to sound like an idiot with your coworkers/friends/associates at the watercooler/daycare/methlab.
To make things easier, here’s a quick roundup of the biggest E3 news from each of the big console houses so far:
MicrosoftThe big news from the Microsoft arena was Kinect, the full-motion body sensor formerly known as Project Natal. Kinect is obviously an attempt to woo families who have gotten bored with the Wii, but their sensor suite had some hidden surprises.
For one, Kinect is not only a gaming peripheral, but a further attempt to control the living room. Software ..read more

My husband likes board games. A lot. So much so that he started a new blog to talk about it, cause I may or may not develop a glassy eyed stare when he talks to me in depth about expansion packs. Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re super fun too, but I’m more of a read-a-book type of a nerd than a roll-the-dice. I also turn into some sort of she monster when I play games past my bedtime, so I don’t play nearly as often as I could if I could sleep past 6 am.
Anyway, he’s much more organized about his blog posting than I am, updating almost ..read more

If Jeopardy! was an investment firm it would instantly go under due to the inefficient nature of its setup. A ferret could do better than a human on Deal or No Deal because of how random and greed-encouraging it is. Wheel of Fortune is a glitzy crossword puzzle for three-year-olds. But Jeopardy! is legitimately tough to do well on. Even if you know the answers, you have to be faster than the Nobel Prize winning physicist to your left and the Classical Literature librarian to your right. And even if you do well, it takes FOREVER to accrue Who Wants to Be a Millionaire-esque hauls. Ken Jennings won 74 straight ..read more

If the most successful example of the game-to-film genre that can be conjured up is “Tomb Raider,” there might be a perceived problem in translating games to the big screen.
However, there were a few games to come out of the 1980s that might have made great films. Chalk them up to quirky concepts, cinematic approaches or linear structure, but, had any of these games been made into movies, the pop culture history books might look more kindly on the genre.
We’re not saying these movies would be remotely commercially viable — especially 20 years after their popularity has waned — but these four plots ..read more

I have a creepy obsession with first-generation game consoles. I don’t want to own any of them — I’d tire of them rapidly, and discard them not long after the nostalgic thrill was gone. I just want to admire them, smell that characteristic aroma of burning plastic, feel the heat that always radiated from their poorly designed power converters, and slide the smooth game/tv switch toggle, just for memory’s sake.
For different reasons, I love all of those 70s-80s consoles. But they all pale in comparison to Mattel’s Intellivision. The brown-and-brass console doesn’t get the respect it deserves — sandwiched into a forgettable no-man’s land between Atari, who was first, and ..read more

In suburban Rockefeller Center Nintendo resides “Nintendo World.” It’s basically an X-Box-free Gamestop with a gargantuan vault of Pokemon cards, but tucked right in the center is a mini Nintendo museum. Here are some pics of my recent foray, amid getting bumped into by people rushing to play the 20 Wiis that are brilliantly all crammed within one 20 square-foot area.

So, I was going through my quantum closet the other day — it’s a pesky rabbit hole, filled with junk that I bought in various converging timelines and parallel realities — and I found this little nugget I’d almost forgotten about.
In Universe U3X-945, everything is precisely identical to ours, except for the fact that Canada formed its own dominion in 1842 instead of 1867. This changed effectively nothing, except for an odd quirk that Canadian software developers Bioware incorporated in 1985 instead of 1995. In this universe, their intellectual property of “Mass Effect” started as a Sega Genesis title in 2001.
The game was a fascinating little romp, and it’s exciting ..read more

The hardcore gaming world mocked Nintendo for their motion controllers, but Mario and friends are getting the last laugh.
Sony debuted their upcoming motion controller — called the PlayStation Move — at the 2010 Games Developer Conference this week.
The big buzzword that Sony is attempting to leverage is “precision,” claiming that it offers a more refined experience over your current console of choice that has motion-sensitive controllers.
The claim is dubious when compared to the accuracy of the Wii MotionPlus (on the surface, both have very similar tracking). Still, once the controller playing field is leveled, the clear advantage could go to Sony, as their console supports a more robust ..read more
