GeekGirl loves I don’t get

Fandom each has its own pieces. For some it is an X-wing. For others it is their replica Sting short sword. Some even like to bask in the glory that is Princess Leia in slave outfit. Now, I can see where these might be guy focused, but even geekgirl can find solace in them.

But for some reason unbeknownst to me geekgirl has some totally different priorities when it comes to geek loves. And most I boggle at. So I come to you for help

Can anyone please explain to me the going gaga by geekgirl over the following?

Book Review – One Con Glory

Autumn
Monday
8:11 pm

Sarah Kuhn, the author of One Con Glory recently posted on geek six when Christy mentioned her book.  I got curious, so I picked it up and I’m super happy I did.   Here are 6 reasons why

1.  To get a taste of the book, the main character, Julie, has her own blog.  Excerpts of it are in the book, but I just looked at it and it is extensive, nerds like extensive things so of course I approve.

2.  I’ve traveled the convention circuit to a certain extent.  They are ridiculously fun, especially when you’re by yourself because you have more freedom to talk to random people.  These ..read more

Tauntaun Skin Rug

Autumn
Tuesday
11:36 pm

So one time I was in a fabric store and noticed some great faux fur that reminded me of of Tauntaun fur.  Immediately I texted my buddy Malaki (check out his awesome Iron Man costume!) and was like “could you make me a Tauntaun head outta foam so I can have a Tauntaun skin rug?”

He laughed for about five minutes then said “Of course!”  He presented it to me at my wedding.  It’s Hothian tradition, after all.

Taking Apple love to a whole new level

Autumn
Tuesday
7:02 pm

Ok, so I’ll be the first to admit that I have an addiction, and that my iPhone isn’t an arms reach away solely because it’s also my alarm clock.  And I realize that I have a tauntaun sleeping bag, Star Wars curtains and a Yoda quilt, so I might be a tad bit biased.  But this is pure awesome.

Why yes, that is an iPod Touch bedspread, and it does cover you with the warming comfort of the future, today!  (or, in this case and if you live in Sweden – ..read more

Superhero Kit for Nephews and Nieces

Autumn
Tuesday
11:46 pm

My fabulous sisters have out done themselves again when it comes to Christmas time/Nerdy Present time.  What to give the offspring that has everything?  Why, business cards of course – superhero business cards, and badges, and the bane of every superhero – paperwork.

The best part of the evening was when my youngest nephew – who’s name starts with an “S” protested that his name was spelled wrong on his manila envelope, an envelope that read “Top Secret.”  Ah, to laugh at youth.

My sister Apryl has templates of all the paperwork for the Superhero Kit on her blog.  It’s a good read (my favorite line item -  “communications with sea ..read more

5 geeky things I did over the holiday

Josh
Sunday
11:22 pm

I hope you had a fantastic Christmas. My technosilence was mostly brought on by the arrival of my parents from the Midwest. The holidays were largely spent under the warm comfort of scotch and no fewer than a dozen varieties of holiday treats.

But I’m back, and snuggling in to the equally protective womb of technology that usually envelops me. Despite being fairly distanced from computers for the week, I had plenty of geeky moments to share with you. Five of them:

Kept defending the words “nerd” and “geek” to my parents.

I didn’t realize how often I use those words as a self-effacing compliment. But every time I mentioned something about “a ..read more

Ah, the end of a decade. A time for pundits everywhere to pontificate on the “Top X moments in whatevery.” We’re no exception, except for the fact that we’re slightly lazier. We’ve got the list rolling on the Decade’s Greatest Moments in Geekdom, but we want your help. Drop us a tweet, or leave a comment below to suggest other items. We’ll add them as time allows, or as soon as we can get up from the couch — whichever comes first.

Zombie Vampire Werewolf…Orphan?

Autumn
Sunday
2:13 pm

So the band that played after mine at the concert a few weeks ago, they had a song called “Orphan Train”  that talks about the trains that took orphans west to have farmers adopt them.  Thing is, some of the kids weren’t really orphans, they just came from families too poor to feed all their children.  So at the diner after the concert a few of us were discussing what really constitutes an orphan.  Would you be an orphan if your parents turned to zombies?  What if they’re a vampire or a werewolf, what then?  Could your mom still be your mom if she is reanimated flesh?  I took an ..read more
