July 2, 6-9ish p.m.
Sandy, Utah
Click here (or scroll down) to get on the guest list!
Don’t know what a Marian Call is? Join us for a special weekend performance and find out why she likens her sound to “the love child of Joni Mitchell/Jason Mraz who was raised by TMBG and wolves.”
At the time of this post, Marian is just days away from launching her “49 to 50 tour,” where the Alaskan and self-professed geek will kick off her performance in the 49th state. After that, she’ll be wowing crowds in each and every corner of the union, culminating with a smash gig in ..read more

Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler takes me right back to the early 90’s. Yes, I realize that the song came out in 1983. However, I didn’t discover it until 10 years later when my older sister got her license and we would drive through our small Washington town, windows rolled down….screaming “…total eclipse of the heart.” So you can imagine my delight when my roommate brought these two versions to my attention.
Ninjas, zombie cults, Hogwarts, and mullets with headlights. Total Eclipse of the Heart: Literal Video.

All the Strip hotels try to take their theme to the max, in order to stand out as THE premier French/Arabian/Desert Oasis etc. resort destination. But sometimes they say “to hell with it” and stick a totally out-of-place show in their nightly lineup. It’s one thing to have a celebrity come in for two shows, but another to permanently feature some buffoon/troupe of buffoons who don’t fit your motif at all.
The six worst current offenders:
6. Frank Caliendo: Monte Carlo
Even if you think his impressions are funny, does Frank really fit in alongside James Bond at the Monaco-themed resort? The panache of tuxedoed croupiers is the thematic vinegar to a ..read more
Carolyn Hester became an influential folk musician in the 60’s. Think “A Mighty Wind” but for realsies.
She’s an awesome lady, and has many a tale to tell.
Like, she even had a roommate who was a Orion slave girl from the Original Trek.
She also raised some awesomely nerdy children, one of which is my BFF Amy. They asked me to set down a hammered dulcimer track in her latest album “We Dream Forever” that she produced with her daughters, who both play and sing on the album with her.
Well, her children are nerds. Both her daughters have worked at the Observatory, as well as half of their friends. Our get ..read more

I collect cover tunes with a hoarding intensity that rivals your aunt’s obsession with decorative spoons. I have playlists full of them, many with missing attributions and questionable origins. Some are forgettable and lukewarm rehashes of the originals, but some use the base material as a springboard to create entirely new pieces of music.
And, even more rarely, those entirely new pieces of music rival the original for cohesiveness and flat-out charm. Below are 5 of the best, but there are scores more out there. What did I miss?

Richard Holdman set the standard for intense Christmas light displays in 2007. So intense that in 2008 his light display was moved from his gated community house to a property owned by his parents. So, all you GeekSixers that are in Utah for Christmas this year, drive past Mr. Holdman’s display and let us know how it is up close and personal. For directions and more information, please visit the Holdman Christmas page. ..read more

Pardon our delay in printing the winners to our “Art of Star Trek” contest — we had dozens of entries to slog through, and while many were peaches, a few were… not really any kind of fruit you’d want to eat.
Here are a few of the highlights:
The light-hearted:
— Robots gone wild: One entry suggested that soulless villains are really creepy, and something like the Borg or Stargate’s Replicators would be a great fit.
— Tribbles: Two of you suggested these deceptively harmful fuzzies would benefit from the IMAX experience.
— Crossovers: The Ewoks, Darth Vader and even Nathan Fillion as Himself all made the list… curiously enough.

The mid-80s were the golden age of kid cartoon music. The previous generation’s music was either corny, or vague action themes with blaring trumpets. And, as the 90s approached, the era of Saturday morning cartoons started to decay.
But for a handful of years, cartoons had their pulses firmly attached to a pop-culture beat, and the theme songs that came out of that stretch of time were fantastic ditties that mirrored the then-exciting Top 40 soundtracks.
We consulted our horrible, Pop-Rock-addled 80s brains to come up with the 6 most rockin’ theme songs from 80s cartoons. It was hard to not just list our favorite cartoons — keep in mind, ..read more
