So, I was going through my quantum closet the other day — it’s a pesky rabbit hole, filled with junk that I bought in various converging timelines and parallel realities — and I found this little nugget I’d almost forgotten about.
In Universe U3X-945, everything is precisely identical to ours, except for the fact that Canada formed its own dominion in 1842 instead of 1867. This changed effectively nothing, except for an odd quirk that Canadian software developers Bioware incorporated in 1985 instead of 1995. In this universe, their intellectual property of “Mass Effect” started as a Sega Genesis title in 2001.
The game was a fascinating little romp, and it’s exciting ..read more

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m kind of a Mass Effect fan.
Hell, I even added N7 armor to my avatar up there. (See him? His awesome manliness crowds out Christy even as we speak — but don’t worry, it’s only temporary.)
I eagerly awaited the sequel. I even went to my first and last midnight launch event. I’ve been thoroughly and completely enjoying submersion into the Mass Effect universe again. It’s a delicious and real world, complete with every bit of sci-fi goodness I could possibly want. The game’s production values and voice acting are both top-notch.
But something has been gnawing at the edge of my consciousness. Some piece ..read more

Remember when I said a Mass Effect movie that recreated the events of the games was a horrible idea? Here’s why:
The game lets you customize Shepard, the game’s protagonist, to an intense degree. You can be a man or woman, and pick your skin tone, ear size, eyebrow spacing and more. And folks get pretty serious about it.
Kotaku has a killer thread going, where they ask readers to “show us your Shepard.” You should really go check it out and marvel at the diversity players have created.
A few random selections:

I’ve now had time to log a healthy (or unhealthy, if you prefer) amount of time with Mass Effect 2. Enough time where I feel I can at least give you a taste of what to expect.
Are you ready for my one-word review? Polished.
Want the full-paragraph version? Mass Effect 2 is the finest example of interactive entertainment the medium has produced to date. It transcends “really good game” territory. It nears perfection — or as close as we can come to it with today’s technology.
Allow me to back up my assertion with a few thoughts:
VISUALS: Mass Effect 2 shines across the board in terms of graphics. I’m playing ..read more

As you may be aware, Geek6 readers voted that I had to attend the midnight launch of Mass Effect 2 at my local Gamestop.
Gamestop’s press release promised a fun evening of “a tank building challenge, grenade launching (real grenades?), a commando dress up contest and more.”
However, I was treated to no grenade building. Instead, I got a sociologically fascinating, but otherwise dull evening.
They turned out by the dozen: IT managers, grocery baggers and holders of business degrees. All were there to pick up Mass Effect 2 and get a few hours — or more — of gametime in before the sun comes up.
“I’m SO calling in ..read more

My wife, in an awesome moment of geekiness, went down to the local Gamestop and preordered Mass Effect 2 for me over Christmas.
Yesterday, she got a voice mail from Gamestop explaining that the local store would be part of a nationwide release party starting at 10 p.m. and culminating in midnight sales.
According to the press release, the event will feature “tank building, grenade launching contests, a commando dress up contest and more.”
This set in motion a bevy of feelings.
At this point, I should tell you that I’m really weird and overly analytical about these types of geek gatherings. I’ve only been to one midnight screening in my life (”Serenity,” of ..read more

Hi, it’s me. The Geek6 blogger that just won’t shut up about “Mass Effect.” Yes, it’s true that I loved that game more than anything I’ve played in a decade. Yes, the sequel is the first game I’ve ever preordered.
But there’s a limit to my love. With the first game’s huge commercial success, and the positive cash flow of a trilogy all but assured, Hollywood has started sniffing around the franchise, and Bioware hasn’t slammed the door in their greedy, botox-laden faces.
On the MTV Movies Blog, Bioware’s Casey Hudson says that they’re open to anything.
“Obviously, we have a tremendous amount of interest from people in Hollywood to make ..read more

I know I’ve written more than a few posts on Mass Effect. But, in my defense, it was the best game I’ve played in more than a decade. There was more emotion than Fallout 3, offered more player choice than any of the Half-Life series, and much less linear than Doom 3.
The folks at Bioware have managed to scratch my sci-fi itch in a way I haven’t felt since I played “Sentinel Worlds” back in the mid ’80s. To my gameplay tastes, it was as close to perfection as I’ve ever played.
And it’s now less than a month until the sequel ships.
The team released a new trailer last ..read more
