Star Trek sneakers: Boldly going on foot

Yes I’m a 31-year-old wearing Star Trek themed shoes and I think they are awesome. They are probably the geekiest clothing accessory I have owned since my magnetic He-Man belt when I was 6. Yes, I have a closet full of geek themed t-shirts, but that’s different. Today the average joe or jane can get away with wearing a geek shirt. Hell, it’s what keeps Hot Topic in business besides the goth stuff. But shoes, that’s different.

The Airwalk Star Trek shoes designed by James Staple and put out by Payless have been out since the DVD release of the movie in November but the lack of needing new shoes ..read more

Geek Alums Sing FaLaLaLa Lifetime

I have a confession.  I love Lifetime movies.  It’s the cheesy, know what’s going to happen, bad dialogue, mediocre acting style of fluff that I can’t say no to.  I’m even more addicted to Christmas Lifetime movies.  I just counted 11 nuggets of Christmas cheese on my DVR and already had to answer the question of “What did you do last night?” with “I watched A Boyfriend for Christmas.” Here’s what I’ve learned, there’s a surprising number of geek show alums in Lifetime’s Christmas lineup.  So, here’s the spray cheese digest for ..read more

Review: Fanboys

What is your adventure of a lifetime? What is it you and your friends have planned since the age of 6 years old?

Well for Eric, Linus, Windows, Hutch and Zoe, it was breaking into Skywalker Ranch to see Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace before it is released to the public. And that story would be the movie Fanboys.

Despite the lukewarm reception the film found with critics and in the theatres, it really does a decent job of capturing the essence of fanboy. From the George Lucas donated sound effects to the banter and dialogue pulled straight from the Wars franchise.

I can see why the movie probably was not ..read more

Shatner on Conan

Just in case you missed it last night, the Shatner was on The Tonight Show. Conan laid the smack down on James T. Kirk towards the end of the interview, but Shatner got him back at the end. Good to see Conan more relaxed and like his old self again. ..read more

10 Years Ago Today: DeForest Kelley passed away

Blain
Thursday
1:09 pm

I can’t believe it’s been that long. I wasn’t even a Star Trek fan at the time and I still remember hearing about his death and still feeling at a loss. On June 11, 1999, DeForest Kelley succumbed to stomach cancer. At the time I knew of Kelley’s Leonard “Bones” McCoy mostly from the animated series and the movies because I didn’t start watching the original series until a few years later. I always thought he was awesome, but after I started watching the original series, he instantly became my favorite character. As much as I liked Kirk and Spock, Bones always seemed much more down to earth. He taught ..read more

A major nit I have with the new “Trek”

Josh
Monday

Spoiler rating: Fairly large. Do not read if you don’t want fairly interesting bits of info from the new “Star Trek” movie.

As most of you are aware, I belatedly saw the new Trek this weekend. It was a lot of fun, and I loved the new life J.J. Abrams infused into the series, but you could park a shuttlecraft in the plot holes. There were far too many to mention in one post, so I’ll just pick one at random that really got to me:

Exhibit A: Transwarp ..read more

A 6-year-old’s review of “Star Trek”

Josh
Saturday
9:08 pm

Note: The following post contains minor spoilers, in a roundabout and cutesy way.

I took my 6-year-old daughter and geek companion Ally to see “Star Trek” this morning. I kept watching her reactions during the movie, which were admittedly more focused on the popcorn and Airheads candy than the ongoing drama. So, this evening, I figured I’d ask what she thought of the film. Our transcript is below:

Josh: Well, Ally — I’m told you went to go see a movie today. “Star Trek,” I believe it was called. Who did you attend the movie with?

Ally: I saw it with my dad. … That’s you.

Josh: Correct. Since that proves you’re either you, ..read more
