Top 5 Harry Potter Moments

We all know Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is here. Midnight showings around the land are selling out. Word on the street is this is the best movie thus far.

While I will not be one of those in line for the midnight showing (the son doesn’t really allow for that any more), I hope to be ushered into a theatre sometime soon in order to catch it.

And for this top 5? My top Harry Potter movie moments. Yes the books are better, but movies are the images everyone remembers. And plus we are talking about a new ..read more

Top 5: Firefly inspired music

My head goes various places and most of the time I am not in the drivers seat. So as it meandered through various news and sports, it decided to settle on Firefly.

I think it was because I saw that I had the episode “Serenity” queued up in Hulu. I tend to give the series a complete watch at least once a summer. And along with when Marian Call visited our neck of the woods recently, it left music on the brain.

Put the two together and it had me thinking about Firefly fan music. Whether you call it filk or whatever, these original compositions which pull from the ‘Verse always ..read more

Top 5: Friends moments

I tend to frequent online television. Hulu is a well known friend and keeps me well reminded of the shows I tend to miss. But what Hulu doesn’t have, someone else does. So I will haunt Adult Swim, ABC, Cartoon Network and The WB websites.

Recently with the summer slowdown and not a whole lot of original material (at least Burn Notice and freshman show Royal Pains started up), I have found myself trying to find something to watch. Enter The WB, now a fully online television venture.

Their original material tends to be 4-6 minute shorts for online series. Not much doing for me there although Rockville, CA had a good ..read more

Today’s Top 5: Cartoon Villains

I was sitting around just letting my brain wander today. It happens sometimes. Then it decides to get lost, but eventually finds its way home. This time it came back dragging bad guys. And not just any bad guys, but cartoon bad guys from like Saturday morning cartoons and USA’s Cartoon Express.

Honestly, I think I have spent more time trying to figure out what triggered the thought track rather than the actual villains who would make up my top five list. Maybe it was GI Joe, but I really don’t know. Actually the more I think about it I am getting a little scared.

So before my head spins and I ..read more

Give film scores their due

So I was looking over this years summer music festival for my local symphony, seeing if anything caught my eye. And sure enough there it was, a July 4th celebration which includes selections from Star Wars. Needless to say I got my tickets shortly after running across that.

Yes it was Star Wars. Yes that is all it took to get me there. But I have been having this arguement in my head about film scores, classical music and symphonies. Eventually I came around to the point that I want my symphony playing film scores as classical music.

In about 100 years, our higher quality film scores will be considered the classical ..read more

Friday Top 5: Epic Fantasy

Epic Fantasy. Books that dominate our life as we hang on year after year for the next one to be released. Books that many could take half a life time to actually know the actual story. Books that we will pay way too much money on because we have to buy the first day it is released. Books we love. Epic Fantasy.

So that is this week’s Top 5. I found it hard to embrace the horror side of fantasy as I almost see that as its own genre. So for this list I suppose I really drilled down to the tenants of fantasy in my brain, alternate world, creatures, races ..read more

Friday Top 5: SciFi TV to be reimagined

Jason
Friday
1:30 pm

Reimagination. Its all the rage right now. Even more so after Ronald D Moore reimagined a little show called Battlestar Galactica. But there is a seedy down side to reimagination. For every BSG there are shows like Knight Rider and Bionic Woman that tease the senses only to leave a bad taste in your mouth when sampled.

So given the need for some good solid science fiction television, what exactly should be reimagined? What can be tackled and be good? Even more so, what would Ron do?

Strap in. Here we go. JUMP!

Friday Top 5: Marvel characters deserving a movie

Jason
Friday
12:26 am

A couple of weeks ago, I whipped up a Friday Top 5 concerning which DC characters should get their own movie. And I got to thinking about the other side of the coin, namely their competition Marvel. And after learning this week that Marvel is developing their very own thinktank of writers to tackle lesser known characters, I think it only fair I give fair and equal time to what Marvel characters I want to see.

Now, if Joe Quesada wants to hire me as a consultant for my list, I will not be opposed. Though the Geek Boss might have something to say about that. So just who ..read more

Friday Top 5: Web series to get you hooked

Jason
Friday
2:01 pm

Quick question. How many of you get your television by actually watching a television? That is what I thought. There is a growing percentage of viewers who turn to the internet to catch up on television, or even watch television for that matter. Its a growing trend that is eventually going to send television the way of the newspaper if they don’t figure something out fast.

Even better than television on the internet is finding new entertainment on the interwebs. No longer is it just streaming television shows or viral videos. There is a whole new crop of shows that are web exclusive. And many of them can rival television with ..read more
